Where can I get Mini Boring bars-- Update

for preboring I generally use a standard solid carbide 5/16" diameter indexible boring bar. I have solid carbide boring bars in 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 and 1". Usually it is good to use the biggest boring bar you can comfortably fit in the hole.
Thanks Carlsbad— I’ll try one of those.

Back when people had more time than money. That's the day my dad was raised in. "Son, we can make one of those." So that was the mentality that I was raised with. "never buy something when you can make it." Now I have more money and less time and I tend to buy a lot more things that I could make. But I still enjoy making my own whenever I can.

Thanks for putting a huge smile on my face! Took me back to the mid 50's hanging out in the shop with my dad and or grand dad. They "schooled" me in the same philosophy and it still comes in handy on occasion.

I’m just saying that grinding a small boring bar to pre bore for a chamber is not hard, especially from an old endmill. Grinding toolbits May be 1950’s but it’s still relevant today and will pull your but out of the fire when you need that tool now. Even if it did take more than 15-20 mins it’s well worth the time to learn the skill

I HEARD A CRAZY RUMOR THAT WAY BACK IN THE DAY, PEOPLE WOULD GRIND THEM IN HSS, SOMETIMES FROM A ACTUAL TOOLBIT, SOMETIMES FROM AN END MILL.
I am sure that has happened in the past. Sounds like an interesting exercise, but it’s way down the list. Thanks. A skill like that would definitely be worth learning and I appreciate you bringing it up. I bet I could grind one serviceable right now. Might take a couple tries but I think I could do it. You got me thinkin— thanks again

Yes that’s how they did it. I like to work on or fix everything I have but I just don’t have the time, even now that I don’t have a real job. Thanks.

Ain’t it the truth— memories

On a side note, I purchased a Grizzly solid carbide shank boring bar several years ago and it will fit in a .236 hole. I picked it up to bore 6mm muzzle breaks. I quit using brakes, but I use the small bar all the time. Handy to have.
