When I see free hazmat on overpriced primers and powder

It wouldn't surprise me if in 5 years none of this stuff is available. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the industry just completely shifts over to fulfilling private contracts and stops selling reloading completely. At least the vast majority of it.

That actually wouldn't surprise me at all.

Let me ask this. The people that pay the extremely high price, in your opinion, what do you believe they are doing with it?
Well I shouldn’t have said fools, except for some.
I realize a bunch of you competitive shooters have winning loads developed for these powders and eventually need to replace your supplies. Between those who need it and the others who want it, they have us over a barrel.

It's a reasonable point - if we handloaders are just specks on their market forecast, as we're sometimes told, or a convenient way to slightly improve the utilization on their manufacturing lines, then we don't have reason to believe they won't one day decide to stop altogether. We probably will never know because who's buying what / how much / when in the military market is generally restricted information.

Correct. Perfectly stated.

The only correction I would make is that the market is going to government agencies private security etc etc It's not the military. Although some of them are probably military contractors.

If you really want to know what the truth is, let every reloader in the USA stop buying components tomorrow and you'll find out real quick how much the manufacturers want, and need, our business. If there were no purchases made for 30 days, you'd see prices fall like a rock in a well.

I do not believe that's true at all anymore. Not even a little bit. Those resources are already being gobbled up for other uses.

I sit on the fence with this as a "newbie" this was my first "shortage" to live through. I was not empty but stopped my target shooting for fear of what might come and didnt want to be with out. My stock is ok now but what will the future hold? I lean toward not wanting to be without......so for now I am watching for better prices to buy in larger bulk. I hope this is the correct move.......only time will tell.

Let's do a little simple math here and it should offer some clarity to the question. The US military reportedly acquires 1.6 billion rounds per year. There are an estimated 140 million gun owners in the US. If every gun owner shot ONLY 12 rounds per year that would be 1.68 BILLION rounds. Of course not all of that would be reloaded ammo, but a hell of a lot of it would be. And again, of course, those who hand load do it because they shoot far more than the average person. So, the math certainly appears to clearly support the hypothesis that handloaders are indeed a significant market. A market that any sane business man would ignore at their own peril.

From a Dealer on another site:

This morning Alliant powder announced a 30% increase effective immediately.

From what I've researched and heard through the loading industry...a gunpowder chemical plant in France had a fire last August, and have been running about half speed since.

That plant feeds a lot of countries their ingredients for powder etc., including the US.

There's a lot of of countries in Europe stocking up on ammo of various sizes etc.

Now does the only two competitors folllow accordingly?
