When coyotes bark/ what’s it called

I’ve heard Dave Afflick (Varmint Safari) say “ky-yaing” have no idea how to spell it. Anyone know? Is that an actual word?

Yip -- A short bark is something I was raised to think of as a yip. So when a coyote (or other dog) is briefly barking, even "squealing" (as if in pain from being nipped or struck by another animal), it's yipping.

Of course, other types of barks might have different terms to describe them, and people might have any number of words to describe this particular (yip) bark.

IMO, a bark and ki-yi are 2 very different vocalizations. They both are used and mean different things based on the what a coyote current situation is, and why it is responding with either sound.

There are any number of coyote vocalizations, barks, whines, yips, kiyis, howls, growls and maybe some I've missed.. Some you can use to entice a coyote to come closer, some let you know your busted, some you can use to locate coyotes and some will scare them away. Between a howler and a good open reed call you can duplicate most of them. The big problem is learning when and where to use them. Once you've mastered them they are a great addition to your arsenal.

I use some barks, kiyis and howls but it isn't something I rely on. For me prey distress has been the most effective but I tend to hunt close cover and they always have to eat. One of my hunting partners hunts open country and uses coyote vocalizations a lot, it works for him.

many years ago I was sneaking through the wet woods and looking for a hog carcass that had been dragged off. I heard barking, just like dog barking. I crept closer and could see a large white dog and a coyote facing off over that hog carcass. They were barking at each other. I had never seen or heard that before. Never could get a clear shot on that coyote. And never could find out whose dog that was.
