Of course the 223 will work on varments.
I have been shooting a local bench league for 5 years now. We compete at 100/200/300yds which I believe is short range.
The first 3 years I competed with a 223 and consistently finished 12th to 14th of 22+/- members. two years ago I moved to a 6mm. First year with it I moved up 4 positions. This year I am now in the top 4. It does make a difference.
I agree, as long as your game is range fire at known ranges attempting the smallest group against other shooters.
If the game is at ranges from 50 to 350 yards, aquire the target, (the size of a groundhog head), range estimate, fire from a field position within 15 seconds and hit in one shot in varied terrain and ambient conditions. Caliber is not a deciding factor.
I thought the topic was caliber/bullet, not shooting discipline. My anecdote was that caliber did make a difference as described for the same discipline. Not to compare one shooting discipline against another and trying to discern which round is more applicable.
The friend that got me started shooting many years ago would also go to Montana to shoot PD with a 25-06! More gun than I would ever believe was needed but it wasn't my place to tell him what to shoot.
I also do not own an AR and currently have no desire for one. But if we were to get over-run by hordes of wild hogs here in Wisconsin, that idea would change.

I shot some 500 yard targets two days ago.
Iv been getting ready for a ground hog match and pulled out a 8 twist 6br bbl Iv had for awhile. Hadn't shot any 105s in over 3 years.
So I bought some TS15.5 powder and a box of berger 105s. BT target. I was only concerned that the chamber I had is only 70 thousandths freebore. It's a non issue after looking at my targets. Pretty happy about 2 inch groups at 500. So now Id say my favorite short range bullet is those barts 65g, followed by the berger 105 target.

Speedy shot the smallest Agg in the history of the Tack Driver, but smallest group went to Randy Holland and it was the smallest group ever shot at the Tack Driver. Shot with my 68gr avengers.

I've been going back and forth (between Avengers & Dominators & loads) with new Billy Stevens built 6ppc.
Avengers finally beat out Dominators last Friday consistently.
The Avengers are GREAT.
Haven’t put it on the website yet but we are coming out with a new short range bullet. 65 grain Viper.
