What's your favorite projectile for saving fur?

I'm wanting to get into coyote hunting and looking for advice for the best bullet to use to save fur. I'll be shooting a 250 savage with 12 twist barrel it likes bullets on the lighter end of the spectrum 70-80 gr. Also shooting a 6mm rem 1-9" twist seems to shoot everything well.
Thanks

17 Remington with the 25gr Hornady HP. Many times you cant even find the entrance hole and I've only had 1 exit ever. Keep it off the shoulder and most drop like they've been hit by lightning.

+1

Serious pelt hunters use the smallest caliber possible. Or, learn to get good with a needle and thread ;D Call Randy Robinett (BIB'S Bullets) and order some of his 88 grain bullets for the Savage ;)

17 MachIV with 30gr Gold from The Woodchuck Den running 3850fps are pretty awesome. Also did well with 80gr Sierra Blitz running 3600fps out of a 6-284. Shot Nosler 87 BTs from a 25-06 and made big holes

If you are a real pelt hunter, you will learn to trap and dispatch them with a .22 Long Rifle (pistol is what I use) right behind the shoulder aiming at the far front quarter. One small hole, no exit.

If you are looking to call and shoot for sport, but want to sell some pelts, nothing larger than .223 will be acceptable. Use the least explosive/expanding bullet you can find and nothing larger than 45 grains. Fur buyers will not buy a pelt with a large hole in them (or will offer you pennies on the dollar for it).

Recently, I have had success with the .17 Winchester super magnum round and not ruining pelts at distances from 50 to 150 yards. You still have to have a great shot placement to keep fur damage down.

IMO if you want to put up fur and are not wanting to sew a lot. Invest in a 17 Rem, Mach IV or Fireball and shoot a 25 Hornady HP or some of Chan Nagels bullets. I have no personal expeience with Chans bullets. The 17 Rem is neat … it just puts them to sleep, a little tiny hole in.

Tim, All of the advice given here is very good and you should heed it if you are serious about saving fur. :) I am a serious dog-hunter and I would not choose either of the calibers you plan to use as there is too much risk of pass throughs. If you can: find a small caliber, high velocity rifle that will run anything 40g (bullet) or less and avoid hitting them on the point of the shoulder whenever possible. JMO, dedogs

A 40 gr. V mav pushed to about 3800 works awesome if you place the shot correctly. Good luck.

Timgunner,
We have many fur takers that use our target bullets to reduce/prevent pelt damage. For your 1-12" .223 use the 52 or 55 grain flat base Match Target bullets. Hope this helps along with all the other good information here!
Take care,

The OP referenced his 250 savage. Thus, my suggestion for RGs 88 grain bullets.

If you don't want to chuck the rifles you have, you may want to consider making a reduced load for your 250 savage with H4895 and use something like a 70 blitzking and work to replicate the energy of a .223. I put together such a load for my 25-06 to fireform brass...plenty good enough accuracy for 300 yard coyotes...have not field tested it yet, but I intend to very soon.

You could do the same with the 6mm Remington and choose a 55 grain blitzking....

I had great luck with a 65gr vmax pushed hot out of my 243 win. Generally no exit with a small hole going in! I have only had one runner with this load too out of the hundreds of yotes that I have taken with it. My rifle did not like the 55 gr bullets. I stayed with this bullet after trying several other bullets that out of my 243 ranged from quarter sized exits to holy red mist carnage! Also TRY to stay off bones. Good luck.
