Whats your favorite old huinting rifle?

Shotgun would be my Browning A5 that was given to me at Christmas when I was 12. Rifle would be my Savage model 99 in 300 savage.

I've got an old Belgium Browning 20 gauge featherweight over and under. Picked it up in the early 70's and thought I paid way too much, $350. I've purchased a half dozen shotguns since then but I always go back to my featherweight for pheasants ducks and even geese. If it's deer, it's either my Mannlicher Mauser sniper model with double triggers in 7x57 made in Berlin in 1935 or, my Ruger Model One single shot in the same caliber. It's wonderful to pick up a rifle or shotgun and have special memories of past hunts with family and friends return.

2nd year Model 42 Winchester. Given to me by an uncle. Shot my first squirrel (a black phase fox) with it. Learned to shoot it well enough to limit on grouse 2x, grouse and woodcock once and rabbits 4 times. 13 year old daughter shot her first squirrel with it. Best darn little shotgun a guy could ask for.

1884 Springfield trapdoor. Cut up and modified by my dad's nutty brother much to dad's anger. Dad left it to me years later with note to never change it. Guess he had a change of heart toward his brother who without permission used his birdseye maple blank on the trapdoor instead of the Model 88 Win it was intended for.

40XB 22-250 that came my way on a trade up. Had the wood stock painted by an auto guy before such was popular. Shoots great, love it.

3rd year Ruger single Six. Dad let me shoot dirt clods with it till I was sore. 10 years later when I had to shoot for a living, my instructors were surprised that I liked to shoot a handgun at targets to 100 yards. No one ever told me that I shouldn't, so I did. Lots of lead bounced around in those plowed fields!

Browning BSS 20. Saw it hunted by an acquantance 28 years ago. Saw him one day and asked. Gun for sale. Surprised to see this old gem HAMMERED. Looked like he used it as a plow. Blew up a tractor battery on it so it had a special leopard finish. Stock had paint on it. Bought it right, restored it, and it is a dream.

Who can have A single favorite?

Rifle: My Grandfather's Winchester Model 55 takedown 30 -30. .Shotgun: My Father's 12 gauge Parker.

In the late 50's I bought a Winchester Model 69, 22 lr bolt/clip. Still haven't put it down. From groundhog to squirrel, wild dog to chipmunk, bird etc. It's taken it all and is still fun to shoot.

My Ithaca Feather light. 12g and it kicks hard. But still I have taken plenty of geese and ducks with it. It has been handed down through the family for three generations now.

the last few years I my go has been a T/C icon in .308, which I consider my lucky rifle. This year I am going to go back to an old favorite. My uncle let me borrow it when I was in my teens to deer hunt with. I am pretty sure he was aggravated & felt sorry for me that I was still using a single shot 20gauge with slugs, with only a bead up front, while my older brother and dad both had scoped rifles. So when we were sighting in before season, he ran up to his house and brought it back to me. A rem m600, in 6mm rem. I went that year and killed my first deer with a gun (already did one with a bow). It took a couple years of sweet talking to get him to sell that gun to me. I went on to get my first turkey with it as well, the first time I went hunting with my future father & law I shot a deer with it. My last year of college I sold it back to him to help pay for classes. I finally got it back after a very long time. After a couple of years in my safe now, it has a scope, and it's going out again. It's just too bad after 15 years I couldn't remember which load was best in it. I plan on taking my son hunting for the first time this year, so the old reliable M600 will be along for the trip as well.

My favourite old rifle is my Sako Deluxe L461 in .222 Rem, it's a 70's build and all original.
I still use it regularly and is a great small game getter. The thing still shoots under MOA with 50gr SP's.

Cheers.

I am in the process of putting a red dot sight on my model 81 Remington 300 Savage. I screwed a Weaver base to the rear sight screw holes ( had a smith do it) in the center of the base. I'm mounting the Tasco PDP3 this morning and will shoot her today. It was my Grandpas rifle and I have had it since I was 16. He was a pretty famous trapper and hunter in our area many years ago and I need to use it again. I just can't pick up the front sight in poor light anymore. As you can tell it's another favorite of mine. Barlow

My first rifle, A Stainless Ruger M77 in 7mm RM that is topped with a Redfield 5 Star 6-18 and I put a Canjar trigger on it. Gun killed a few deer..

Come on guys, I know there's more stories out there. Barlow

For squirrels I find that my Ruger 10/22 with a 4oz. trigger, a 1x4 scope, and Eley Red box ammunition , and thumb hole stock is about as perfect as it gets.

I H-A-D 2 favorite guns that, unfortunately, I no longer have.

1.) I had a Remington 1100 12ga. 3" mag w/30" Full Choke Barrel.. I used it for everything from pheasants to crows. Fabulous gun! With 3" #4 shot, 50 yard Pheasants were not out of range!

2.) I also had a Marlin 22MAG clip-fed Bolt rifle. I shot an innumerable amount of squirrels, Grackles, Crows and fox with it. I also had GREAT fun thinning out the Armadillos on our Deer lease. I don't think I ever had a rifle that afforded me so much fun for so little price! And if anyone thinks they were not accurate, I have news for you! I knocked off several Turkey with it (In Texas that is legal) by shooting them right where the neck flares out to meet the breast. It hammered them to the ground..

Shotgun would have to be my Ithaca 16g SxS double,,, still has my GreatUncle's hunting license from 1919 inside the butt
Rifle would be my Swedish Mauser that I traded for a few months ago, my first bolt-actioned hunting gun

My father's Win 1894 30/30 never failed me or my brother we draw straws to see who gets to use the 94, my father received the rifle as an engagement gift from my mother in 1940 she paid $15.00 at the Globe store in Scranton Pa.

My dad picked up a nice used Savage Model 24 DL, .22 magnum/.410 over and under, 24" barrels.. That was my favorite grab and go growing up, as my two sons did, and I still take it for a walk today.. It weeded out its fair share of small game.. Following this thread, I removed the forearm, it's stamp "G" underneath.. Prices sure changed over the course of years..

I’m fond of traditional “American Classic” hunting guns. I like nice wood stocks and blued steel. I like them simple and reliable…no high-tech redneck gadgets.

I got this one new in the box a few years ago. I was in storage for over 40 years and still had the tag on the trigger guard with the info and inspectors name. The owner of a store put them in storage in the 60's and when he passed a friend bought the inventory. I probably shouldn't have touched it but it got a trigger job 11* crown and skim bed and float. It shoots like a new custom and gets used but babied.
