Whats your favorite old huinting rifle?

Well my favorite shotgun would be my 870 rem wingmaster that I bought when I was 13 (65 now) and favorite old rifle would be my 88 Winchester in 308 or my 99 Savage also 308. I have some newer guns in other cals. that I use but after reading this thread I may change plans this year. I had a lot of fun with those guns and will always remember the good times I had with them.

i just got a 1898 springfield armory in 30-40 krag. it was my grandpap's. my dad said that killed a lot of deer when he was just starting out. it has an old herters stock and was barrel cut down from 30" to 22". i think i will try a williams aperture sight and try beartooths 173gr fngc..

Varmintshooter,

If you are interested, I have a set of new Redfield SR-88-100 2 piece scope mount base that I've had for years but don't recall ever putting it on my 88's because I used peeps. If you'd like, I'll let it go reasonably. This mount has the adjustable rear. If you'd like, send me a message..

I watched as a Model 70 sat at a gun store for two years....it's a 270 WSM... Finally traded another rifle for it right after Winchester went south about 8 years ago. Pillar bedded the rifle in a MCM Sako Hunter stock...topped it with a 3.5-10 Leupold VX-III. Hand loaded with Nosler 130 Accubond over a stout load of IMR-4350.......Amazing Cartridge...Light recoil...hits like a hammer. Most deer go less than 10 yards. Zeroed at 200 yards....

For Christmas of 1950, Mom wanted to get Dad a gun to hunt with. She went to Sears & Roebuck and a sales person
asked her whether she wanted a shotgun or a rifle? She didn't know the difference and explained to the clerk that he
hunted rabbits, squirrels, pheasants & quail. So the clerk sold her this Savage model 24, 22/.410 over & under.
How could she go wrong? It was both a rifle and a shotgun.

Dad took my brother and I out to the local dump and let us shoot cans with .22 shorts. He would load it and hand it to us
and eventually put a 410 shotgun shell in it and surprised us. So, this Savage is the first rifle and the first shotgun that both
my older brother and I ever fired. It is also the first gun that my older brother & I got to hunt with.

I thought about this since the last post and my favorite centerfire is a model99 savage in 308 .It is immaculate so I baby it. My first shotgun was a 870 special purpose I bought new at kmart of all places. My other all time favorite is a Remington 03-a3 which is in excellent condition and original. That gun with open sights shoots better than me.My favorite double barrel is a 12 gage stevens 5100 that I bought for a 100.00 at a household sale. It points well and fits perfect. I took it on a pay for view and shot more birds than my 2 partners could together. I also used to do a one handed demo shooting it one handed and did 10 for 10. I couldn't do it longer because of the weight but it is a real nice gun for me.

Remington 760 Gamemaster in 6mm Rem that I was given as my first big game rifle for xmas when I was ~ 12. I can honestly say that I've never missed a deer with it, 6 for 6. Plus, "Gamemaster" was such a cool name for a teenager to have stamped on his rifle's barrel.

To add to my earlier post, my first rifle that I got for my 13th birthday in 1959. It's a J.C. Higgins.
The Model 12 Winchester became my pheasant/rabbit gun when my Dad got himself a Browning 16 gauge.
That freed up the Winchester for me when I was in High School. I now have all of those guns, but these two
were very special for me when I was in High School.

Hey Jon
I really admire and respect all of your posts. You are my favorite personality here on accurateshooter.com. You have over 7,000 posts and will soon surpass 10,000. Show us some of your favorite hunting guns that you talk about in this thread. Let’s see some pics of your favorite guns. I have never seen a single pic from you. Please show us what you shoot or a pic of anything that you do. It will be much appreciated.

For a rifle it would be my Steyr-Mannlicher Model L in 243, my Dad bought it at the factory while stationed in Germany right before I was born. For Shotgun it would be my old 20ga Winchester 1400 MKII, my Grandfather bought that for me the day after he received the letter that my mom was expecting, he just knew I was going to be a boy. For Handgun it would be my Ruger Speed Six, my Dad had it customized many years ago and it still has one of the best triggers ever found on a revolver.

Unlike most of my hunting buddies, I hunt ugly. While they prance with their Kimbers, Silver Pigeons, or Custom Noslers, my goal has always been to wow them with economy and skill. ;)

For Pheasants and shotgun zone deer - 12 gauge Remington 870. I see no earthly reason to hunt with a pretty gun just to get it all scratched up hunting in the woods, brush and corn. It is so old and worn in it shoots as fast as any of my friends auto loaders (or maybe I have just learned to handle it that well?). A true "switch blade" of guns, it also works really well as a slug slinger with a scoped fully rifled barrel or as a water fowl gun. Purchased in 1986, I have killed more of everything with this gun over the years than any other in my safe. What's not to like!

For Grouse - 20 gauge Remington Wingmaster. This was a gun I inherited from my grandfather and I used to shoot my first Rabbits and Squirrels when I was 9 or 10 years old in Kentucky. Love that gun.

For rifle zone Deer in the woods- Pre 64 Winchester 94 in .32 Winchester Special, Iron sights. Brush buster extraordinaire. I have killed deer at a whopping 25 yards through a tree with this rig. Lightweight and fast handling. I feel like John Wayne when walking around with it.

For Deer or Pronghorn on the Prairie - This has been a newer environment for me to hunt, but I use a Tikka in 30-06 or Ruger M77 in .243. Both are topped with Leupold scopes. The Ruger is 25 years old with nice wood stock and 2-7 magnification. Have humped it all over Wyoming and South Dakota chasing pronghorn and has never let me down. My oldest son shot his first deer with it so it holds great memories.

I actually have a couple of favorite's. For deer & elk it is a Remington model 722 in .308 and for varmints it is another model 722 in .222 both of which were my fathers who sadly passed in 1986 but there are lots of memories in those two rifles.

Small game it would be an old JC Higgins bolt action single shot .22 that I bought from Montgomery Wards after a long summer of mowing lawns, still have it to this day.

Birds is a Winchester ranger 12 ga pump that was a birthday present from my uncle when I was 12 yrs old. Hard to say how many hundred or more realistically thousands of shells have been shot through it.

Although I've gone way off into the tactical side of rifles with fiberglass stocks and big high powered scopes with wildcat cartridges my favorite is still a savage 99. This was my wife's grandfather's old rifle made in 1904 it is a 30-30 saddle ring carbine with open sights. It has seen 110 years of use and has lost all the bluing on the receiver. The barrel has only spots of bluing left and had the sights soldered into place. This gun shoots like a gem and can still group around 5" at 100yds with open sights. My favorite shotgun is the old reliable remington 870 wingmaster. If I'm hunting woods or birds these are my go to guns.
