I recently had my buddy Zack at ODCR rebarrel an old hunting rifle of mine in a Proof Carbon 7mm variety. Zack did some bedding work, Nitriding, Cerakoting and it looks really nice. As always Zack did an awesome job.

History of this old relic…. Some 30yrs ago it started life as a Weatherby Ultralight 300 Win mag with a Leupold VariXiii 3.5-10x50. I wanted to change it up a little 10-15yrs ago so I put it in a McMillan M5 stock. It is now topped with a NF NX8 4-32.

It’s a bit heavy to do a ton of walking/stalking with but turned out very nice. I guess the weight isn’t terrible considering it’s a magnum with nice glass.

I’m ready to make some more memories and eat some venison from this baby.

It’s weighing in at 10lbs 2oz.

I will add some pics later.

Deer 8.5-9lb 257 roberts or 7lb 45-70
Varmints various 9-14lb with the last one being a 7lb 2oz with sling,scope,ammo and a 13-23" Harris bipod 223AI

Perhaps 7 lbs, A CZ 527 that was initially a 7.62 x 39. This rifle has been re-barreled 22" barrel light weight contour & chambered to 6mm ARC. She now sits in a vertical grip carbon fiber stock.

7 lbs even.

Titanium M700 clone action by Prairie Gunworks (Canada), Lone Wolf synthetic stock, 24" stainless/fluted bbl Tuff-Coated matte black w/Leupold VX3 3.5-10X w/CDS dials in 7mm-08 Ackley.

That's for my high country hunting, varmint rifles are a different story altogether. For black timber elk, it's my pre-'64 M70 in .338-06 Ackley. Bulls fear that rifle.

My "go to" rifle weighs about 9lbs with scope, sling etc. It just fits and works for me. I've had heavier and lighter but this one just works and shoots better than it should.

My favorite hunting rifle is right around 7 lbs.
A shortened, lightened Thompson/Centre Encore in 7mm Rem Mag. Leupold 1-4 on top.
I bought it when I was 18, and it's killed a LOT of game!View attachment 1686416
This is my oldest with an elk he took with it last fall.

For just shooting, I love heavy guns. For my style of hunting, it almost can't be too light.
Those generational memories!! I love it!

My favorite is just at 7.5 lbs with scope. It is a long action Model 700 LH switch barrel with a 25-06 Hart and 220 Swift Shilen. I’ve had some fairly serious neck issues, and a light weight rifle was a must for a certain time of my life. If I only had to have 1….this would be that rifle.

Dan Dowling trued my action and did all the metal work, and we dropped it in an Edge stock.

It is not pretty…no ceracoate or fancy patterns…but it shoots as straight as my heavy rifles for about 6 quick shots. To date…I’ve only ever needed just one

It has worked perfectly on Elk, Blacktail, and Coyotes…need to get some pigs on it as well…
