What's Wrong With My Shooting

Thank all of you for the great feedback. Dusty is on track for exactly what I suspected. When you see a good group of three through the scope, you want to empty that last round from the magazine, so you can show your buddy how badass your Tikka is compared to his Weatherby Vanguard. It is easy to lose your concentration and break form when you are excited about the next shot. Dusty gets extra points, just because he has the mysterious word "COVFEFE" in his profile.

I prefer to allow some time for the barrel to cool between shots, but you lose position and composure each time you wait. In my next session, I think I will try 10 shot groups. If the 10th shot is a flyer, then I know Dusty was right.

Covfefe is a codeword. Im afraid if you shoot a 10 shot group youll have 3 in, 6 walking away and 1 out

I use a small rest for my hunting rifles that doubles as a shop rest
It was purchased from protector for $ 65.00 black iron tri pod with adjustable top and leather protector bags. Cheap and effective

A few other points. Soil at the range is rock-hard and lumpy. It is difficult to find a comfortable prone position, and my elbows still hurt, but I don't expect that anyone is going to roll out some plush red carpet for me when I'm hunting either. Every grouping was taken from a different position with one exception. Someoldguy was right that the overlap is not consistent. My groups started with the bottom target in the pics, and my last grouping was the top. Since the first group was low right, I adjusted the scope and shot from the same position, and you'll notice that two holes from the next grouping are dead center. On the third shot in that group, I pulled it and knew the instant I squeezed the trigger. The fourth in that group was the proverbial flyer.

Dusty is always right, We just had that conversation

Nothing is wrong with your shooting.

Your gun doesn't shoot.

Ya really can't play good pool with a broom, nor good ping pong with a frying pan.

jus' sayin'
That same Tikka in a Varmint barrel with a 1/8 twist will shoot better than any store bought 223 rifle I'll put a$100.00 on it any day.

I would not be surprised if that is true. A 1/8" twist would be a big advantage over my 1/10". But even with the setup I have, my very first four shots with that bipod and scope a few months ago resulted in a 0.72" MOA at 107 yds, including the #4 flyer. If you exclude the flyer, it was 0.34 MOA. Of course, temp was in the upper 40's, the bipod was sitting in some nice shock-absorbing mud, and the ammo was Sako 50gr. If I can shoot it that well, I can't imagine what a skilled shooter could do. Can't find that ammo anywhere now.

Ahh, . . . yes. It's always the elusive 'unavailable ammo' constructed of unobtatium, ain't it?

Look. Tony Boyer buys barrels like most of us mortals buy bullets. If you need a 'Majik Bullet' to get the barrel to shoot, then it's a waste of time and money.

You're disappointed. Been there, done that. Move on and don't look back. No amount of good intentions in the world will fix a janky barrel. And if it looks good but won't shoot, that just increases the diameter of the pill.

AMHIKT.

Took you shorter than most to come to that conclusion.

Thank you for the compliment. I defer to the difference of ignorance and stupidity.

Ignorance - attempting something once because you've no experience and don't know any better.

Stupidity - performing the same action over and over again and expecting a different result.

Anyhow, I surmised in post #13 that the barrel had an issue. No information has been posted since to change my opinion.

Try a front bag or rest instead of a bi pod with some 55 gr FGMM
(Maybe) you can prove Dusty wrong"

Sounds like insanity to me

Do tell. So. What do you suggest in the face of insanity?
A different path/ avenue to your objective.
What you referred to as stupidity is the definition of insanity. That is if my small simple mind remembers correctly.

Fair enough. I never considered insanity.

Dang it!

Shit, man. If it weren't for insanity, i reckon I'd never done much of anything.
Not much of a Hunter S Thompson fan but one of the signs on the wall in my gunroom is his.....
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
