Has anyone noticed all the abbreviations(acronyms) that people make up so they dont have to type a couple words. It is a pain to figure out what the writer is saying alot of times. Why cant we at least define what it means. We are not mind readers and it isnt really necessary.

If a person has my typing skills, 10 words per minute ;), I can't chastise someone from using them.
It took a couple months for me to figure out UKD, and POTUS. If the thread has a theme to follow, sometimes they come into play, but I usually just abandon the post.

I would agree on texts creating the wave of acronyms. I can't even remotely keep up with what my daughter and her friends text and even e-mail...it's almost like learning another language!

I agree, some people don't even use apostrophes either, so they type a word that means something totally different than what they are trying to say. I guess they assume we're mind readers, but then again, IDK. ;)

Then on top of that, their English is atrocious! Theres for theirs etc.... When I worked, my correspondence had to be FLAWLESS, or it was rejected! Even if it was grammatically correct and the spelling correct, if you could not convey the proper thought to the person(s) who needed to KNOW what you aspiring to say, that came back too! Sometimes I sit and try and figure out what the OP is actually asking or what thought he / she is attempting to convey! When that happens, I don't bother to answer because I may be reading the whole thing incorrectly!

I agree. When you read a post or answer which is packed with pertinent information it loses some validity when you read : there for their, your for you're or you are, to, too, two, etc. I realize this is not a grammar or spelling site but then couple in the acronyms and a lot of good information is hard to decipher.

I don't really care about the barrage of initials. If I can't figure out what the poster is trying to say, I just ignore and move on. My day has seldom been critical enough that another 10 seconds of typing would be a limiting factor.

The lousy grammar bothers me more and it seems most of the people don't even know their limitations. Actually could have sold something to a guy who couldn't write two consecutive words that were spelled right or in context. I gave up and kept the item. I try to be tolerant of those who, apparently, went to schools where they were not checking for accuracy or context. Too bad.

I think the origination of abbreviated language was Morse code where the savings in time of sending characters really makes a difference. It's common in CW to leave out most of the vowels and it's amazing how convoluted a word can be and still be understood.

Since we are now speaking of English language issues; is it acronyms or abbreviations you are irritated with? Or both?

I can see how people on phones would use acronyms.

Strange though, in the age of political correctness, the english language has been severally weekend by the use of them in formal situations.

I guess it boils ( ::) oops) down to the correct writing format for the correct situation.

I'm old school.......

Speaking on a phone is easier than texting ? You can still talk on them.

I didn't care for Pig Latin as a kid either.

I totally agree Jon

And i'm not into cool...
