What's what in barrel coolers?

View attachment 1138440 I think I have $23 in this one batteries included

Exactly what I use, and I have to tell you it eats up batteries. So I bought 6 rechargeables with a charger for about $20. It puts out a LOT of airflow through the barrel, so much so that I find I must wait about 5 minutes after turning it off to allow my barrel to "normalize" before shooting another group, or the POI will change.

It gets your barrel cooler than the ambient temperature?

I read about one some guy wrote an article about in Precision Shooting several years back. He took a no longer shootable case for his particular rifle, drilled out the primer pocket and tapped it for a small brass fitting. To the fitting he attached a hose, the other end of the hose was attached to a small compressed gas bottle, like the type used for paint ball guns. When the barrel got to hot for his liking, he'd put the aforemention case in the chamber, and give it a couple of shots of compressed air. He said that this cooled the barrel from the source of the heat, inside to out. Never tried it but it sounds like it could be very effective.

Here is a good one, add a piece of soft thick walled poly tubing and feed the air into the chamber and let it blow out the muzzle. Only $14.99 at Walmart and it's rechargeable.

I've been using one similar to this for years but had to carry a bulky battery pack. This would be much easier but I don't know how long the power supply will stay charged. This is a high volume low pressure blower and usually 60 seconds will cool that barrel as much as it sitting 4-5 minutes on the stock with the bolt open. With the battery pack I also take a 12v clamp on fan to cool me.

Like several others I use the Mattress Inflator from Walmart. I cut the head off a fired case, put silicon glue around clear plastic tubing and shove it in the case. Connect the tubing to the blower and put the case in the chamber. I have numerous hoses with different caliber cases attached and mark each case with a sharpie for it's caliber. In the hot summer I use a very small ice chess with ice packs in it and set the blower motor inside. Note: for my .223 I had to use a smaller hose and cut off about 2" of the larger hose, slip it over the smaller hose in order to adapt it to the blower motor.Barrel Cooler.jpg

Good stuff here. I like the idea of high flow home spun options. Just makes sense.

I saw a guy at a UBR match using a powered air mattress pump. He had his plastic tubing connected to a bore guide that he inserted in to the chamber. It worked well.
