What’s the real deal with Savage?

My first rifle was a Savage 10FLP in .308 with a 24" barrel. Shot great from the factory but I wanted more. I put the barreled action in a devcon bedded Bell and Carlson Medalist stock, barrel is free floated all the way to the barrel nut, and the rifle will shoot .5 MOA at 100 yards all day long, with factory GMM and reloads. I bought it because it was a readily available left handed rifle. Love my Savage.

Mine won’t eject spent BR cases at all, I’ve considered maybe carving out a drop port but here lies the problem with Savage, the cost of improving outweighs the value.
Is it just dropping them in the port and not tossing them out?? If so the fix is simple replace that little ball bearing under the extractor with a larger one.. MY 223 and my Creedmoor had that problem.

Here is the size you need. 3.5mm/.140" A five minute fix..

I have several and they can become addicting. I prefer and search out the shot out or worn out stagger feeds. I dislike, no I hate the center feed.
Stagger feed would eat what ever I threw in there. Not so with the center feed.
And those that want to say more or better support for the Remington, maybe, maybe not.
Bone stock off the rack rifle taken to the bench with store bought ammo, I would put my money on Savage.

The Savage brand, along with it's barrel nut headspacing design and adjustable/upgradable accutrigger was in my view, a bit of marketing genius that added considerably to the popularity of DIY rifle building. No longer do you have to buy a whole new firearm when interested in changing to a new caliber/chambering.

The fact that many other gun manufacturers have incorporated the barrel nut and accutrigger designs into their models is good evidence that the Savage business model has become the most popular and successful one.

That you can walk into a sporting good store and buy an inexpensive, American built, off the shelf rifle and ammo, drive to the range and shoot a sub MOA group in a single day speaks volumes of the advances we've seen in firearm design and manufacturing within our lifetime.

Savage may not be the "best", but they certainly are popular and enjoy a good reputation for being accurate right out of the box.

I don't really see how this could be in question....

We truly know it's no question were there is more support for which manufacturer. But it would be nice if more accessories were available for Savage like some of the other rifle companies. Imagine how many people are looking for a good stock upgrade for a Savage. Call KRG, they will tell you quick, fast, and in a hurry they have no plans for making a KRG Bravo Chassis for a Savage, yet they make them for some other rifles that I believe are fewer out in the field, disciplines of shooting. Now that in my opinion.is asinine.

Hey Steve’
I have the improved extraction kit from SSS installed except I haven’t got around to the spring yet. Maybe I did something wrong but it just doesn’t like spent BR cases.

It all depends on what you want to accomplish.
If just a hunting or informal bench gun they can't be beat for out of the box accuracy. I have 14 of them in all different configurations, everyone of them is .5 or better.
Now if you are looking for a short range BR gun be prepared to spend a lot of money to be competitive but usually not winning unless you shoot factory or custom class. I have been there and done that.
I now have one that has been castrated (shouldered barrel), placed in a McMillan stock, and it will compete hopefully with the custom made guns. Cost- right around $2500.
So proceed with caution.

This is not faulting what you did. I have a 22 BR I put together from a Savage action I had laying around and a Tracker stock I won. I did it as a groundhog rifle. But back to your 2500.00 investment. For 2500.00 you could buy a used REAL bench rest rifle, have a new barrel installed, buy dies and cases. A much more competitive investment I belive. Something to consider if you really want a competitive bench gun.

And I have and for less but I still like to play around.

Good answer. I actively try to recruit new shooters and often here fussing about the price of a new gun. I always point out that for about half the price of a full boat new custom rifle you can be just as competitive with used. Lots of used 6ppcs around and a Panda is about 75.00 at Kelblys to open the bolt face. I have had 2 opened, RBLP ejection still works fine. But there is an appeal to putting something together yourself and Savage action gun can be vary accurate, it's just that lack of a Jewel trigger that gets me.

Jeffppc the one I have been screwing with has a SSS trigger set at a hair under 2oz., wears a ABC barrel, 30BR and is competitive. With a better shooter behind it, it might even be a some time winner.
I have a second one that is too heavy as it sits hopefully it will be corrected shortly and I can start working on it.
I bought a used Hunter class shoots better than me. Kelby, Krieger, McMillan, unsure of trigger, 30x47, 6x Leupold, all under 10lbs..

One more thing remember most guys do not sell their wining guns, they sell the ones that need to be replaced for winners.

Under 10lb 30x47, not for me. I know a local fellow who is recovering from a detached retina from a 30x47 that weighed (he sold it already) a lot more than that. That's the whole story of the 30br and score shooting, it made everyone a contender. This is not a knock on you or your rifle but does anyone ever correlate the lowering of score shooting participation and pitting 30s and 6s together to hit the same dot. Yes I have a 30, I still think it hurt the game. Thanks for the opportunity to rant. Oh well, it did help get me into groundhog shoots, lots more fun usually shooting a combination of yardage from 100 to 500.I do think as the major gun makers were starting to slip Savage came in and has pushed them to clean up their act and get back in the game.
