What would you use for ammo?

Since Center-X has become unobtanium, what would your next choice in rimfire ammo be if you were looking for accuracy?
Thanks,
Darryll

My advice is worth what you paid for it. I’m nobody. I only have YouTube and forums to base my opinions on.

I thought you just had to test. I can’t count how many videos, reviews, threads I’ve seen where a scenario plays out with someone shooting Sk, pick a color, out shoots Eley tenex or lapua Midas plus.

Respectfully, in my opinion, only the paper with the holes in it can answer your question.

It has to depend on the rifle your using. I've found SK Auto shoots best in my CZ 457. My two Remington 540XR's shoot about anything well that's mid-range priced, like SK Std +, Rifle match, and Pistol match, while my Anschutz loves Eley Tenex so well I hope I can find more of the same lot.

Lapua Center x comes around every month or so.
You have to try different ammo in YOUR rifle.
Every action, barrel or chamber (head space) will shoot each ammo differently.
Everyone seems to be on the Lapua band wagon lately cause
they seem to have kept their tolerances and the Eley hasn't.
But you'll still see on Whiddens site that the Eley still shoots
in the right rifle very small groups.
And you can find Eley almost everywhere now.

My go to ammo is SK Long Range. But it may be as hard to get as CenterX Whidden has SK Rifle Match in stock. I got a few bricks to try. Eley is mostly in stock, give it a try.

SK Rifle Match at Whidden right now is your best bet--Wait a couple days and that chance will evaporate --grab some of that to get you by --you have a good chance that it will shoot Great
If you are not in line at the usual sellers your chances of getting Center X are very slim

Another decent option is test Eley at Whiddens--test fees for Eley are low and they always have a big inventory of it--since you get to test as many as 15 lots or so the chances of getting some that is great in your rifle go way up

I would run don't walk to grab some of the SK red before it is gone--many folks have won matches this season with it

Another "maybe" is Phone BlueCollar each day--they get in Center X and sell it that day--it never makes the web site--I have walked in on 1/2 dozen cases being unloaded at the dock--it takes some luck and staying after it

Good Luck

Get a mixed brick with 10 different lots from Killoughs or Clint Swigert and test them yourself
Is that even a thing anymore in this market? If a vendor gets any amount in, a case or a pallet, it’s gone in a day. By the time you receive the test brick, the vendor has been out for 3 days. Please advise. I’m wrong a lot.

Also, is it (lapua ammo), that much better? Is it that you get zero flyers that over a 250 shot string one miss means you are out of contention in some competition or what? Honest question from a guy that knows little here. What justification is there for the 100%-150% cost increase over a good lot of Sk? If a guy is playing a game where every single shot and every .001” matters, I get it.

I guess “there’s levels to this?”

I’d be so let down if I spent $200/brick, shot several 5 shot groups that averaged anything less than .250”.

I guess if you took the rifle to the test center, went until is shot 1’s, all day, bought them out, and were done for a decade.

What distance are you shooting? I shot 50ft 4-position for about 30 years. My rifle is a 40X International Free Rifle with Lyman 20 power super target spot with 2oz trigger. I found that it would shoot almost anything I fed it. I tried RWS, Ely, orange, black, ten x, Lapua. I settled on Winchester Expert 22 hollow point. It was cheap, shot within a couple thousandths of the RWS, and was CHEAP!!!! At longer ranges the Good stuff was better.

A few months ago I ordered a box from several Eley lots to test and purchased a case of the best. The main issue is delays from fed ex.

In international, National and Olympic competion there are shooters who have the skills and abilities to shoot 250 rounds into the x ring consistently. In local club matches, very few shooters can really tell the difference but like to think they can. Shooters in the above competions have worked fulltime for years to get that good.

That’s a good bit of information. Thanks
