What would cause this barrel damage ?

To make a long story short. Boyt this used for next to nothing as a little play around gun. Noticed it won't shoot factory jacketed for anything. Tried one or two hand loads , not as bad but still pretty bad , scheme to like cast bullets so that's what I've been feeding it . Can hit min beer cans @100yd so it's fun and ceap to shoot.

Finally after enough people said I should try again worked up some jacketed loads again. Shit goot then it didn't, got annoyed and decided to bore scope it and o_O

Bore scoping starts at about the 5min mark worst of it is about the 6:45 I think. The HECK could have caused this ? About the only thing I have this bad is my old beater Mosin and most of my guns are used by non existent except my other H&R have stuff like this in the bores

Classic bore reamer marks and im betting inclusions in the steel ive saw it in a stick of chrome Moly and in a well known barrel that appeared after 200 rounds.

I would never buy a factory new rifle or a used rifle without borescoping it. I borescope any new SS barrel I might buy for my benchrest rifle also. I have had only one problem long ago with a bad barrel but it was IDed without have made the investment in chambering and fitting.

Chatter marks from the button being pulled through and poor steel quality with a ton of inclusions in the steel. I wish he would have wiped the solvent out with a dry patch.

My first thought is corrosion and/or bad steel. I know it might be spendy but maybe a relining is on the horizon?

Not chatter marks. Those are tool marks from the reamer which were ironed out by the button. The other stuff is pitting, from corrosion. If it was my rifle, I would lap it. As an alternative to that, I would wrap some superfine steel wool around a jag, charge it with 400 grit Clover compound, and scrub the whole barrel. This is polishing, as opposed to lapping. Nothing will remove that pitting but you might be able to reduce the effect of it. This is kind of one of those "nothing to lose" situations. I have seen corrosion like that from flies choosing a barrel as a good place to die.
With any tip-up action, it is important that the breech be fully locked up the same for each shot. Otherwise, you will see some wild results. I have had some very good shooting H&R's but have seen some turkeys as well. If looks like yours may be harboring an inner gobbler. WH

Not chatter, looks like very low grade boring that has had no lapping. If it were chatter, it'd be a random pattern, not the very repeatable one you see right down it. The ugly stuff is bad corrosion. To cite "inclusions" is drawing a long bow.

I agree with Will- give it death with some fine abrasive to see if the accuracy improves. It's hardly a Purdey so no loss if it doesn't.

Send that gun down the road and never look back. I've kicked dead horses in the past but no more. It would cost you more to rebarrel it than the gun is worth. Trade it for something that shoots.

That barrel is a sewer pipe ... no offense! TONS of pitting from corrosion. I could swear I saw a SS media pin at 8:52 in the bore!

I think it's time for a fresh barrel and learn how to take care of it.

What do you use to clean your barrel, and what is your practice?
Now days ? Nylon brush with some JB or Iosso. Short stroke from the breach Forward. Patch that stuff out with a jag and cotton patches then go back with skm Hoppes. Like two wet patches , let it sit a bit 10-30 min depending on what I'm up to. Patch all that that out then run a pat or two of alcohol to neutralize the solvent. Usually I'll bore scope it before and after . And do this about every 50-100rd depending. That's with my new guns and barrels.
But I like buying used a lot so then it varies with those.
THis one was used. Got it at a pawn shop for like $250 because I thought it was neat. Proceed to sit it in the corner of the gun room for like two years same. condition as every thing else and other then my milsurps nothing elese I have looks like this

Ah very interesting. That being said since you mess with them a bit you happen to know where a guy would look to learn about fitting barrels for these things ? Tired grey beards but I can't ever seem to find it

The little worm pattern may be bad steel inclusions but that bore needs a serious JB polishing and CLEANING. Needs some elbow grease and bronze brush with tight patches on jags. Dry it well and look again and see how bad the holes are under the crud.

I had a Howa in 223 like that
those are pits from corrosion / lack of cleaning/ moisture. I firelapped it which did help , went from 3-4” groups to 1” groups , took about 10 rds in each grit. However after 50-100 rds, it would open up again . I was told that firelapping it a few more times would fix that but I eventually rebarrelled when I got a good deal on a blank .
