What would be your ideal?

Just wondering what your ideal 6mm cartridge and bullet combo would be for varminting, rockchucks etc)for ranges between 300-600yds.To make it interesting lets say you had to fill a gap between 6ppc/br shooting upto 70 grain bullets and 6.5-284 shooting 140 vld bullets.
I think i would pick something like the new 6.5x47 Lapua necked down to 6mm shooting either 87v-max or 105 a-max.

sounds good mike. Here in england we already have 6x47 swiss match brass so i would have chose that over the xc but i dont think it will be long before the lapua is freely available over here and i would guess that it will be much easier to get hold of the lapua brass in the long run than the RUAG swiss match brass.

243 AI or 6mmAI with 10 twist Barrel pushing a 87 Vmax at 3500' to 3600' will take you out to 1000 yds with good kills. I tried the 6XC for long range Benchrest, but could not get the velocities I wanted. My 6BRX was getting the same velocities as the 6XC 3000 f/s using a 105 Berger, with 6 to 8 grs less powder. I run a 87 vmax a 3250' with the BRX.

I use both the standard 243 and 260 Remington to accomplish this. The 120 Ballistic Tip or 140 Amax from my custom 260 sure hits chucks hard.

The 243 shooting 55's is great out to 500. After that I switch over to the 87 grain Vmax.

Mike.

GUYS,
Granted being a rank newbe to this i'm thinking of using a 6br with 90-95 grain up to 105-107 grain bullets. With a 1in8 twist Krieger. I intend to use it for long range shooting and varmints. Eventually getting into 1000 yard br or f class shooting.

Hard to beat a 6 BR or one of it's iterations: 6 BRX, Dasher, etc. There is a lot of load data and experience with this cartridge and it is winning 600- to 1,000-yard matches. Seems it would knock off a vermin or two. Less powder, less erosion, unquestioned accuracy.

Hi i already have it a 6mm Dasher 26" barrel 8 twist 271 neck shoots like stink i just have to point it in the right place will shoot 55gr BlitzKings to 115gr DTAC's i use mostly 107gr Molly MatchKings with 33.8gr Varget Lapua case and rem 7 1/2 primers.

I use a standard 6 mmbr with a one in ten twist, minimum turn .270 neck..i seat the bullets right up to the lands.. I push the 87gr V-max out with 31 grains of Varget & a mag primer...It does ok in the accuracy dept..stays to an inch or less at 300 yds [Nothing spectacular]..but for a varmint rig I have never had better accuracy...The converted action & timney trigger setting in an old remington 40x stock with the 8 X 32 nightforce it tips the scale at 13 plus lbs..My only complaint is the lack of really spectacular kills..It kills cleanly, it is just different from my 22-250 with a 55 gr v-max..That cartridge really knocks the dust off groundhogs out to 250 yds. & beyond..On my last outing I used both guns.. the 6MMBR had the edge past 300yds for accuracy & it did make clean kills up into & beyond 400 yds..I only got to use that gun for a few days in the field..I noted a couple of hogs twitching some after being hit well with the 6mmbr...The 22-250 usually just knocks them flat..I hit one at the farthest distance available from a spot I really like..Both in fact three hogs there were past 450 yds.. The 6mmbr kill was a solid thump & flop over, twitch, then dead..At the same distance on a much smaller groundhog the 22-250 just flattened one & had another twitching bad enough to shoot twice...I guess not a scientific comparison But I'm going to try to use a 75gr V-max bullet with a bit more velocity...Early limited testing indicated the 87gr bullet was more accurate in my gun...So I got that load ready to hunt with this past october..I'll have more time this year to try & find a bullet/load that really shoots well & knocks em flat...mike in ct
