What would a new action have to do to stand out?

With the number of high quality actions available now and the number of various personalities behind them, there seems to be something out there for everybody to support (or avoid) already. What would a new action, or manufacturer, have to do to stand out in the crowd? Conversely, what would be an immediate dealbreaker?

1. $1000 max price
2. Choice of 3 lug and 2 lug
3. Have the design features to accomodate 338 Lapua / 300 Norma Boltface
4. Have a larger bolt dia specifically for using .590 boltface and still have enough meat around the rim of the case.
5. easily replaceable extractor
6. thinking 17-4 body with chromoly bolt to help prevent galling of the lugs
7. larger barrel tenon 1-1/8 or 1.25" dia.
8. Easily replaceable/upgradeable bolt handle would be nice to be able to change
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. dealbreaker would be closed bottom, needs to be a repeater and accept AICS Mags
10. If including a built in Pic rail, make it a 30 moa vs a 20

I’d love to see a push feed using a mechanical ejector with a CrN bolt. I’m so sick of DLC and black nitride that I can’t see straight. Sliding plate extractors are my favorite but I like what Mack Bros uses also.

The ability to order with a 0/10/20/30 moa built in rail would be great.

But there are so many good actions out there that it’s going to be tough to break into that market. I have a buddy trying his best and I wish him success. He seems pretty driven.

A custom mini would be great too. I think that’s a big hole in the market. Something for 20 Vartarg- 6BR sized cartridges.

Cartridge specific action , dedicated to the cartridge your gonna use.. no more-no less not a mere say universal…
Cooper arms had 3
M38 for hornet/fireball size cases
M21 for 222-ppc cases
M 22 for BR—284 cases
Too bad they beoched all the way through the barrel tenion threads, limiting the size barrel that could be installed on them..
A repeater option would also benefit-

Bat had the S,SB,SV, now in obsolete territory, for parts, and bolt face discontinued, a repeater option in the cartridge size appropriate size would benefit.. kinda like the Super Six from Borden being discontinued.. was a great action for dasher repeaters.. now discontinued..

For any purpose, it's a general question about actions and options. For example, if your use case is short range BR, what would the ideal action look like or is it already available?
As far as your example, in the real world nobody is going to better BAT which dominates SR BR, any barrel swap to another action headspaces virtually perfect, almost exact same for bolts although not commonly done. Their machining pretty much without equal, everybody else is fighting for a distant 2nd.

There are lots of actions out there that will work beautifully for F-open, F-TR or PRS.
To my knowledge, there isn’t one designed around the needs of position shooting. I’m thinking a very serious updating of the Barnard P action with .260” firing pin fall and a trigger hanger to accept Remmy pattern triggers with adjustment to remove cock on close. Move the ejection port south a bit and include a roller cam for bolt opening.

At the best - a $1000 will get you a factory action not a custom one…and even then, some factory action sell for more than a $1000..nice to dream but your feet must remain on the ground at one time or another.
Well when you can buy a used Remington 700 for half that
I tend to just stick to Rem 700's
(And since I have my own equipment I don't have to pay a gunsmith to do any mods or chambering for me,)
They've served me well
And The custom I built on a Ruger American once in 260 Rem
Impressed me so much that again for $500.
I just don't see myself paying $1200 or more for
-----Just an action.
When for the extra coin I could also buy the barrel or stock

The Kelbly Atlas 338 looks as close to what I described
so I may go for one of them once I decide to build a 300 Norma

My dream action? I want a 1 mile rifle for Christmas this year if my neck/spine surgery goes well.
A Terminus Zeus LA in 30 Nosler for me. It has all the options I want. There is no need for a trigger hanger, two threaded pins screw in the action to hold the trigger in place. Integral Picatinny Rail. Tolerances are so close pre fit barrels obviate the need to have a gunsmith FCH the barrel. Std, Magnum, .338 Lapua bolt faces available. QC option to have several barrels in different bolt head sizes.
What's not to like?

Not to take anything away from Bat... Bat is great. But... I think there are a lot of the new actions that do everything you stated, and fit and finish is off the charts. Lots of things have changed in the last 10 years.

A straight pull bolt may not tend to break a rifle’s position in the bags or lift bipod legs.

Design a straight pull bolt where the first energy and motion of the handle unlocks and rotates a floating bolt head (interchangeable for case head sizes). This first motion is leveraged.

Move the primary extraction from the bolt handle area to either inside the bolt where the floating head makes contact with internal cams, or, maybe where the lugs are captured like Weatherby’s, and then on opening, they “cam” on their front because they follow a raceway cut at a very slight angle.

The big differences being the bolt does not nominally twist or lift the gun, and lugs not only stop rearward movement but are used for primary extraction, where a mechanical advantage (leverage) is sometimes needed for stubborn cases, but not usually.

My comment was in pretty much reference to the BR world which, for all practical purposes is the toughest performance environment for an action to survive. As far as “lots” of actions……pretty much none of them have shown up there

221 fireball specific action, bring lapua brass back for it, mag fed. Everything specifically designed around that case. Now here is the kicker... I want a 700 SA footprint! Get building and sign me up for one or two.
