What to hunt in southern states

Fellas,
I want to get out of the cold north this winter and get away from the snow and below zero weather.
So my question is what small varmints are there to hunt in the southern states??
Predators are good as a fill in.
Just need to get something going for this winter any ideas.

Thanks

the southern states, takes in a lot of territory, where are you considering,

Ga, deer, squirrel, quail, dove, coyote bear

Al same plus hogs

Fl, deer, snakes, bugs,
don't know bout the rest

Bob,
Any of the southern states is fine with me I just want a break from winter and have two new rifles to put to good use.
240 weatherby mag and 220 swift that is why I had varmints in mind.

The Swift might be good on nutria in the Southern swamps - Louisiana mainly. In some areas down South they shoot beavers (not that kind) about like we shoot groundhogs up here.
Me? I'm headed Southwest. Drier, sunnier, more predators/varmints to my liking - and none of those damned Confederate flags to look at. ;D

Yes when I said southern states I should have said any southern state -south east or south west any place without snow but must have some critters to hunt.
how far south do prairie dogs live?

Just come to Louisiana and shoot anything with 4 legs, LOL, just kidding. We have "Nutra Rats" and the state will give you $5.00 for every tail you bring them. Bring them quick, after a day or so, you won't get closer than 100 ft from them, they stink after a few days.

We have a little dry land, and a lot of swamps. Plenty of game as well.

Wear your chaps, we have a lot of snakes, I should have been bitten several times, but I grew up around them. I am lucky as I have stepped on a fairly large water moccasin early one morning, it just rolled over and hit the water. I think he was as scared as I was. It wasn't quit daylight yet, and all I had was a flashlight. Never will forget that. I came back the same way and their were 5 more, I killed 3 before I could get more shells in my 1187. I have killed many, even with my mower! Even killed a Rattler with 14 rattles, and was slightly over 6ft without his head while rabbit hunting. We have plenty of copperheads too.

But I have watch this state go from open land to all private land and private clubs. Not much open land to hunt on, and the National Forrest get pretty full during hunting season.

Good Luck, Dennis

Dennis,
The Nutra Rats sounds like a challenge if you survive the snakes -LOL
Thanks for the idea on a different type of hunt.

Maybe you haven't checked lately.

"how far south do prairie dogs live?"

Some live further south than where wetbacks become wetbacks.

CONFEDERATE FLAG?
my great great grandfather and his brothers and neighbors fought, were wounded and died in that historic event - a part of American history evolving to the nation we are today.

The are buried in honor as they died for their "country and belief".

Today politicians and ignorant people on both sides of the street have forgotten this and turned the Flag into a symbol of hatred, to have something to hate, should we also turn the British flag into a symbol of hatred?

both southern bigots and northern bigots use it for their personal venting and gain. A true loss of civility, respect of history.

I live south of Tampa. To me there's literally no "good" hunting here for anything. First is most if not all land is private and it's hard to get permission to hunt anywhere. Then you will have to deal with all the swamp, wetlands, bugs, snakes, gators etc. I say nuts to that. Don't even think about trying to walk through all the palmetto.

I do "hunt" on a place north of Tampa. I just sit in a tower and shoot coons, possum, squirrel and watch some does (rarely legal) and occasionally hogs. Now hogs are a kind of varmint. Only thing is after shooting one you will have to "deal" with it, something not normally done with the other critters.

I travel north to Georgia, spend the $300 each year for a hunting license and deer hunt. Besides deer I have taken numerous bobcat, coyotes, wild dogs and thought of hunting all the quail and doves I see constantly. Here again, I always wear snake boots and have killed at least one rattler each year along with an occasional cottonmouth. For some reason their cottonmouths don't seem to be as aggressive as those I have had to deal with in Florida.

I say forget Florida for hunting and check farther north.

There fun, they tear up our levee's and basically a nuisance.

Don't laugh, but depending on where I am going, I either take my 44 carbine, or . . . my 338 Edge. With my Edge, I get the tail pretty easy. I just make sure I only use it in a remote area. Armadillo's are second on the list, they don't tear up land as bad as the Nutra's, but they leave there mess.

Now that Ferrel Pigs have made their way down here, I might have something extra to have fun with.

For the record, my match's come first.
