what to do? What TO DO?

If it is a Rem 700 ? I have a box full of LA factory bolts with .308 bolt face PM me if interested. Chuck
thanks for the offer but i live in Scotland.. it is also a tikka T3 and the thought of a new bold is eye watering at 400 British pounds.. like 600 usd or something like that

what i am really trying to achieve is lowering powder consumption and reducing throat corrosion but keeping with the good B.C of the 7mm or simmilar.
These would be better answers if we knew the rifle you have to work with...

Here is the problem with the mechanical fixes:

Yes, you can sleeve the bolt face and add an extractor. ($)

Yes, you can replace the bolt with a bolt having a standard bolt face ($)

But what do you do to solve the feed rails which are wider for the 7mm Mag. when you drop down to a .473 case head? The solution is to do a DBM conversion with center feed. ($)

Personally, I would give the reduced loads a try first since all you have to do is match the bullets to the reduced load and get some H-4895.

But in the long run, cheapness aside, I would re-barrel to a 7x57 Mauser (.275 HV Rigby) with corrections or substitutions and call it a great asset.

Regards.

yeah i should have mentioned the model in hindsight. sorry.

i would be working with a tikka T3. and bolts for these are like £400

Going back over your answers and the suggestions from the members, it appears you are 'boxed in' for solutions. Given the cost of a new Tikka bolt and the cost of gunsmithing the original, I have to go along with member 'snert' to suggest selling the Tikka and buying what you really want. If you choose to stay with the Tikka as a brand then they offer:

7mm-08 (the twist isn't fast enough for the longer VLDs)
7x64 (think 7mm-06 with too slow of a twist)
.260 Rem.
6.5x55 SE

Personally, I would take the 6.5x55 SE and enjoy. There are a ton of excellent bullets and powder combinations for this cartridge along with excellent choices for brass. This is a win-win for you whereas other solutions are a real pain in the wallet and calendar.

Best of Luck with your decisions!

unfortunatly in the uk selling and buying new guns is not all that simple. it is less effort to work with what you got. i also have had it on the market for over a year now and no one has even enqured about it. i litrally could not give it away!

One cartridge I haven't seen anyone mention is to re-barrel to a 264 WM. You can use the same brass, just neck it down and trim. Recoil is a little sharper than my 30-06 and my bum shoulder appreciates it.
It replaced a 338 WM and a 300 WM in my stable.

Here is the Tikka T3 bolt face image:

Technically, the diameter of the magnum bolt face can be reduced as is done with the Remington bolts with a sleeve. The difference here is having to move the extractor in towards the middle because of the reduced rim size. I would check with a supplier to see about getting a 0.473" extractor before doing any work so that the dimensions can be checked.

Barring this or replacing the bolt, reduced loads using H-4895 and lighter bullets will have to be the solution. Simply using a lighter powder charge will not have enough effect without reducing the weight of the bullet as well. Longer, heavier, high BC bullets will continue to add to the recoil.
