7 mm rem mag

Hi I want to build a accurate 7 mm rifle for a while I va's thinking short mag but people seem to sturggle with velocitie ewen with 32 inch barrels I want to use 28 inch and shoot 180 gr bullets 2950- 3000 fps
can I do this with 7 mm rem mag ?

I have tested a 7mmRSAUM at over 3000 fps with 180 VLDs from a 28 inch Broughton 5C 1:9 using N560. I would not recommend this load for a hunting rifle but it would be OK if you could adjust the charge for temperature. It can be done more comfortably with a 7mmWSM using a wider range of powders. I'm not sure what would happen with the RemMag case. It seemed like it took a lot more powder for any given velocity increase when I went from the RSAUM to the WSM; but I don't see any reason why you couldn't get 3000 fps out of a 28 inch barrel with the RemMag.

Tony thanks for your input its just that I have had my share of heavy bolt lift bad case life and loose primers
so I want to do this right I can get norma cases for this would this set um be compettitive in F class
and what about recoil

If you are focused on F-Class, you might want to consider a barrel in the 30-32 inch range. No matter which case you choose, the Norma primer pockets will start to loosen up if you push the pressure too high. I have had excellent results with Norma brass. It is very well made except I can't figure out why they can't toughen up the case heads. That being said, you can go with a longer barrel and slower powder which will get you the velocity you want without pushing the pressure as hard as would be necessary with the shorter barrel. I have asked about case life with Norma brass here a couple of times and it appears that maybe 6 reloadings it about it at peak pressures while people talk about more at lower pressures. I haven't actually fired any Norma cases to failure but I have seen the primer pockets loosen up with loads I would like to use after a couple of firings. The primers don't fall out but they go in a lot easier than they did the first time.

I shot 175 gr hunting bullets at 2900+ fps from a factory built 7mm Remington magnum with a 24" barrel. No problem. Used published load data too. That was with H870, it's not in production any more, but other slow burning powders are.

Never tried 180's from a 7mm.
