What to build?

My bosses best friend asked me to build a rifle for him. He wants me to teach him long range shooting with it and wants to shoot pigs at long range. He also wants to deer hunt and possibly elk in the future. He doesn't load. And his budget is around $3000. Anyone want to help me come up with a plan?

260 repeater. Plenty of factory ammo around. Or 30-06.............or 6.5X55.......... Here we go again.

I was thinking 260 or creedmoor except right at the end he said elk. I like the 308 but he wants to plink steel at 1000 and I think there are better choices. 300 wsm might work well. I have one I use for long range hunting. Any ideas on parts with this budget.

Stillar, Mcmillan hunter or similar, Krieger 28 inches and fast twist, Vais or similar brake, Nightforce, a case of ammo of appropriate cartridge/bullet combo for distance/game in mind. i like the WSM idea.

There, all done...

I'm planning a build around the same budget including glass, I'm thinking a Stiller Tac30 (short, tac300 is long) action, Stocky's LR/T stock, tuned R700 trigger, and barrel up to about $500. Leaves about $1200 on the table for smithing and optics.

The rifle above may do the trick I'd be interested in the details, but since he asked you to build a custom I imagine he would want your input on the build especially if you're going to be coaching him.

I would stick to the Ford and Chevy's of the shooting world. He'll recognize those brands and have more pride in the build when he brags to other rich folks about it.

-Trued Remington 700 or popular Remington Clone
-McMillian or Manners Fiberglass stock
-Have a competent riflesmith do bedding job
-Insert any Match grade barrel
-Caliber readily available off the shelf
-26" barrel in most caliber's will give you enough velocity for intended purpose
-Lighter contour
-Jewel Trigger 2lbs /w safety
-I'd prefer an internal magazine for a hunting rifle, the box mags get in the way but that's just me.
=Sub MOA rifle under 8lbs

Completely trued (new & unused) Remington 700 action, timed bolt with handle tig welded in place.
Krieger 1-10 barrel finished at 26", chambered in 257 Weatherby Magnum with .285 no turn neck.
McMillan stock - aluminum pillars & glass bedded - BDL bottom metal.
Jewell trigger with top right safety set at 1-1/2 pounds.
Nightforce 2 piece 20 MOA picatinny scope bases.
All metal work Cerakoted black.
Built by the Pennsylvania Precision Perfectionist…. KW Precision:cool:

So yeah that'll pretty much do it. :)

The .257 Weatherby Mag may require that he learns to reload.

I'll bet he wouldn't care that's a pretty cool package all together.

I saw Weatherby Mag and I knew it meant at least one thing. Big. That rifle should be a laser beam. I load for .25-06 which I consider flat shooting and with the Weatherby Magnum we're talking a lot more powder.

I wasn't sure how common ammo was. The OP should contact you to see if the price is fair, surely it's going to be discounted compared to building a rifle from scratch including the time savings.

It should meet all his criteria.

These are all good ideas. Keep them coming. The budget has to include the scope or I would have sold him my 300wsm. I think finding ammo will be an issue. He is less enthusiastic than anyone on this forum but he has money and wants to spend it. He won't want to search for ammo and probably won't buy it online. A friend of mine recommended I just get a stock Remington in 308 and put a better scope and stock.

-I'm thinking of buying a ptg trued rem 700 action
-Pick a barrel and chamber in 308
-b&c stock or hs stock
-timney trigger or tuned x-mark
-vortex pst 6x24 Moa reticle
-20moa rail
-Burris sig zee rings with off set tuned for scope
-standard bdl bottom metal

I think setting him up with federal gmm 175s will be a good starting point and he will be able to buy ammo anywhere. This should get me close to $3000.
