Cold bore groups?

I'll give you .50c on the dollar and help you out if you decide to sell :)
is that a VR-Pic action?
What bullets are you shooting?
Nice range are those cuts from the left and right down range? hard to tell from the pic, if so I see a tough to read cross wind even on a mostly calm day.

Thanks, but I think I'll slum it for a while yet....

Bullets are moly plated Berger 105 VLD's, H-4350, 7 1/2"s, running 3030.

Yes, it's a Bat VRPIC action, #3 Rock barrel cut to 22", McM Classic Edge stock, Seekins rings, and 2.5-10 Nightforce.

It's not a shooting "range", just a place I have permission to shoot. If I add the neighbor's place, and shoot kitty corner across the properties, I have stretched it out to 1925 yards.

Very nice set up. I have a VRPIC on order now for a tactical build an I'm up in the air as to 6 or 6.5x47. Being that I have a 6br 8 twist I'm leaning 6.5.

Tubbs claims less variation with cold bore shots when using HBN! alf is getting good results with moly, could be something to it! Mechanically the only variables to me are bore, bullet and powder unless you figure how your barrel works with heat in it! I don't know but maybe button rifle barrels may have less change from cold bore or maybe cut barrels do! I wonder if the powders one is using has more effect with chamber temps and warm guns effecting burn.

I cold bore...clean bore sight all hunting rifles..i fire one shot...run a clean, dry cloth through the barrel...let it cool down (approx. 15 minutes..sometimes i run iced water outside the barrel..barrel pointing downward) & fire again...been doing this for many years...i get great accuracy from my rifles...i zero them at 300 yds.

Taking wifey to airport, figured I'd hit a honey hole hunting spot on the way home.Weather front moving in,might get lucky on some varmint action?

It's a little windy so needed a little more poop than the EDC,cast only R700 7-08.So,dug way back in one of the safes and snagged a gem.2016 CDL SF,'06.It's bone stock except for a trigger spring.Heck, other than that, the action has never been out of the stock. This is also a cast bullet rig.3-9 Leupold VXII

Gun hasn't been out of the safe in over 6 months.Had a mag full of CB's.First shot out the shop door @50yds centered the dime sized sharpie mark.2nd shot hit a 1/4" low @100.

This is basically a bone stock rifle. The loads however, are anything but. These are highly developed cast loads.ES and SD's are incredibly low.....bragging #'s.Maybe 200 CB's down the pipe?

Point being,IMO.....the ammo and how well balanced the rig is overall, plays as big a role in cold barrel X's as does the components.

I have a customer that wants me to build him a light weight, long range hunting rifle that will group well with cold bore shots. He said he doesn't care how well it groups after the first shot, and is VERY adamant about the first shot hitting in the SAME spot EVERY day. My question is: Is there a secret to building a gun that is intended for cold bore grouping? Is all of the precision work I use to build a long range hunting or competition rifle any different from building a gun the will group well with a cold bore?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,
First you would build the rifle as you build any accuracy rifle. First how far is he wanting to fire this cold bore shot? No gun made will shoot at the same POI for a 70 deg. day and a 0 deg. day. That is made by the shooter. Rex covers this as well as any one, you will has to find the vid., he has 100+ ballistics start around part 25
If he is looking at a 200 or 300yds shot, no problem, if he is wanting a 1000 yds shot, he is dreaming. Sunlight can change the POI at 1000 yds. I have made many cold bore shots on groundhogs at 500 to 600 yds. also I has hit clays on cold bore shots sighting at 1000yds benchrest.

And the topic started in 2013...wonder if he ever built the rifle and if his customer is still complaining about it when he doesn't make the shot first time...:D
Sounds like the buyer wants the builder to guarantee the buyer's marksmanship.

A guy that wants a guarantee as stated above does not know his azz from third base about shooting. Sounds like a very high maintenance customer that you are going to teach to reload, clean barrels, how to measure oal, bench techniques, how to evaluate a rifle scope, and has absolutely no idea of how wind effects a bullet. Expect an argument from an internet expert, and you know little because he has read this or that.

My first question would be, "are you shooting in a warehouse or underground shooting facility where the wind will not be a factor"? Are you using some kind of wind flag, or Kestrel instrument to tell you how the barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed and angle? The guy will probably disappear.

I knew an old gunsmith in Ca that told high maintenance customers that his job was over when his machine work was done. It was up to the customer to learn to dope wind, reload, clean rifles, and bench techniques.

Wow a blast from the past. Sounds like he had too much experience with factory rifles that walk all over hell. You know like a rem700mountain they put out or a Mini-14. Both if shot painfully slow are capable of good accuracy. Add heat and accuracy goes to hell.
