Butterbean,
I don't want to sound negative and have no idea how much experience you have in Rimfire Competition or even how serious you want to get, but unless you compete in a 10/22 Rimfire ONLY competition, you stand little chance of beating a bolt action Rimfire rifle, no matter how much you put into a 10/22. Sure you can spend a ton of money and put all sorts of cutsie things on and it'll make that 10/22 shoot better, but the second the bolt gun guys with serious rifles show up, you are heading for disappointment if you haven't been down that road before. I have a good friend who I compete against regularly and he likes messin with me and drags out his 10/22 that he has fitted a McMillan stock, a Volquartsen Barrel, a Leupold 35X Scope, a high quality trigger (forget if it's a Jewell or something else) that if you add up the retail costs, it somewhere in the neighborhood of $2800 total. Enter an $1100 Anschutz (gotta add a scope of your choice) and the final scores spreads are enough to make a grown man cry. And I'm talking 50 yd ARA targets and course. My point is simply this, if you have money to burn and just want to play with that 10/22, great! Make yourself happy. But if you want to get serious and win competitions, seriously consider putting you money into a higher quality bolt gun that'll get you the results you seek without the frustration of spending oddles of money and coming up short only because the basic product just isn't capable of winning serious shooting matches no matter what you do with it. Again, I don't mean to sounds negative or ruin your fun, but just trying to save you from throwing money down the drain. Years of playing around and shooting have made me an expert at wasting money on projects that just won't win. Good luck no matter which way you decide to go.

The advice on bolt guns is probably right on. Having said that I have a 10/22 squirrel gun that can put the hurt to Beldings out to 200 yards and change. It has a 20" kidd barrel on it. 200.00 for that barrel, which I thought was a decent price. I was very tempted to buy a Lilja, but at 375.00 it was a bit out of my budget for a squirrel gun. If it was a competition gun I probably would have spent the extra money just because I have had good luck with lilja before, and had never used a Lothar Walther barrel. Kidd uses a Lothar Walther blank.

Trapper,
Great advice on the Kidd barrel. And though the Lilja's are super expensive, they are also my choice for a competition bolt gun in Rimfire or Benchrest centerfire competition rifles.. That friend I mentioned in my last post has two Competition Benchrest Rfiles, one having a Hall action and the other a Turbo and both have Dan Lilja barrels. They are super sweet to shoot and I suspect the only reason I mostly outshoot my buddy with my Anschutz is not that my rifle is superior as I sincerely know better. But because I just get lucky sometimes as I usually only outshoot him by 5 -10 points when he shoots with those rifles. And we're talking scores in the 2000+ range. But those 10/22 are so much fun to shoot. I didn't want anyone to believe I didn't think they are a nice rifle because they are. It's just when you get down to competition accuracy that they are lacky. So enjoy that fun that those Ruger 10/22's offer.

Butterbean, for about $1000 total, including your 10/22 you can have a gun that will shoot 1/4" groups all day long if you do your part. Really all you need are KIDD parts. Barrel, trigger, bolt, his action screws and a Volquartsen scope mount. The Volquartsen mount attaches to the barrel not the action. Much better. And you will need a decent stock and BC offers a good one. Plug in some Wolf Match Extra ammo and you will be on target. Good luck.

only problem with that is that the gun will be on the ragged edge of what it can do....and there's more more you CAN do to it... you can spend the same $1000 on an annie...and have same/better performance...and not even TOUCH the gun yet...

and if you want good groups, you damn well better shoot more than just wolf...rimfires are 100% ammo dependent...and you'll have to try a LOT of ammo from lapua, eley, cci, wolf, sk, etc..etc... before you find what runs right in your gun. After you get the ammo right...then you gotta go to different lots of the same ammo....and from there you can weight match and rim thickness match/sort.....

although i will be building my 10-22 with a kidd barrel, don't overlook green mountain barrels. i did 2 builds for a couple buddies of mine at work and put green mountains on both of them (only because they were on sale at midway) and they shot lights out, even with walmart bought bulk federal red box. with wolf match extra, it shot 10 shots into one TINY little hole. and that was even with the stock triggers!!! the hogue overmolded stocks worked wonders as well and provide a SURE grip on the rifle
