What size Boron to use?

I have moly coated for years. Many of you will think that is nuts I know. Anyway, I am interested in trying the Boron Nitride. Using the links in the forum, I found that there is several sizes;
70 nanometers (0.07 microns)
0.5 microns
1.5 microns
5 microns

Neco supplys moly in 0.5 microns. So what size Boron are you using to coat bullets??

Hey Eric,

While I haven't used hBN yet, the stash recommended to, and purchased by me, was the 70 nanometers size. I have the application instructions somewhere on my computer, if I find them I'll share.

Regards,

Bill

Thanks Bill that would be great. The only instructions I have found was on these forums. None of them mention the size.

I know this is an old thread. I found it searching for info on what size HBN particles to use for bullet coating and barrel treating.

I found this info on the site of a company that sells HBN.

Here is a link to the site if you want more information https://sandblastingabrasives.com/hexagonal-boron-nitride-powder-order-page-781.html

It explains what -5 and -10 micron means.

  • Bullet Coatings (Dry Lubricant used in a vibratory tumbler, order the -5 micron)
  • Gun Barrel Coating (Reduces Friction, dissipates heat, may extend life of barrel. Order the -5 or -10 micron)

I have been coating my bullets with the hbn. when I started, the nano sized hbn was not recommended because it is small enough to get in the skin through the cells ( the hbn is small enough to go between your skin cells) and I did not like the idea of breathing something THAT!!! small without knowing the consequences of it getting in my lungs either. just my 2 cents and ymmv. good luck

I found this info on another forum:

A fine powder of approximately 0.5 microns, but this isn't the stuff needed to provide the lubricity we are after because it agglomerates (to gather into a ball, mass, or cluster, uncontrolled buildup, caking, bridging, or lumping). A further process makes the particulate a bit bigger (around the 10 micron size) and in this form it is a flat platelet that considerably increases it's ability to reduce friction.

I tried using Microlubrol Hexagonal Boron Nitride Ultra Fine 0.5 µ micron powder and it was very abrasive and stuck the bullets in the case necks.

I am not coating bullets but I did a little experiment this weekend. I've been having issues getting consistent seating force on my 6.5x47 reloads. I'm using the 21st Century arbor press with the force gauge. I started using moly with a q-tip to lube the case necks before seating my bullets and it really helped the seating force become more consistent. I've been observing around 20lbs of force to seat the bullets(with .002 neck tension). I ordered some HBN and WS2 to try. I used a q-tip to lube the necks with the HBN. My seating force went from 20lbs with the moly to over 100lbs with the HBN. I stopped when the gauge got to 100lbs and the bullets were not fully seated. This stuff feels slippery to the touch but it did not work well for seating purposes. I did not try the WS2. I cleaned the HBN out of the necks and used moly and the seating force immediately dropped back around 20 lbs.
