What scope power???? HELP!

Hello everyone, I am putting together my first BR gun, A Winchester Model 70. I am at the point where I need to pick a scope! Money is an issue and I plan on a used scope. What is a good power to look for when I plan on shooting out to 600 yds. Most of the shooting will be 100-200 yds. Thanks in advance....

You can find some great deals on used scopes. Leupold scopes, even used, are covered by the factory warranty. I've purchased several used Leupolds, which have worked out great.

Since this is a target rifle, not a hunting rifle, there's no reason a fixed power scope won't work fine. This can save you a little more money in a world fixated on variable power scopes.

I'm not a benchrest shooter. I compete in long-range prone so I actually hold the doggone rifle instead of resting it on something. This means I prefer a scope with perhaps a bit less magnification than many might recommend for benchrest. In the past I've generally shot 600 yard matches with a variable power scope set on about 10x - 12x. My son just made off with my 6.5-20 Leupold for his varmint rifle, so I replaced it with a nice fixed 12 power Leupold for the match rifle.

Interestingly the Hunter Benchrest guys are limited to a 6x magnification, and shoot really incredible groups at that power. Just food for thought. Regards, Guy
