What Remington actions are reliable?

I have a lot of Rem actions with custom barrels; they shoot very tiny groups without exception. Only two have been blueprinted. I had the bolts on six of them fixed and timed properly by Dan in Alaska. All of them of course, have upgraded recoil lugs, quality triggers, and Brux, Krieger, Muller, Lilja, or Pac Nor barrels, in quality stocks, properly bedded and free-floated.

I think I may just sell this bbl'd action. Let somebody else sort it.

I got 2 bolt guns and 1 semi shooting real well, and feeding them keeps me plenny busy.

I think I want other toys anyway.

After having Rem 700s trued, I went the custom route. I still have some factory 700s. Those factory 700s will get UrbanRifleman barrels or Criterion Remages upon needing new barrels. These guns always shoot well. I refuse to spend money on blueprinting and opening up threads to where I now have to send the rifle off to be re-barreled.

My recommendation; purchased a custom action that guarantees headspace. Then buy your desired prefit barrel of choice. You can screw together at home and verify with some no/go gauges.

I have had and still have 700 SA Blue Printed Action Target Rifles.
I have Won lots NRA type Matches. A 700 Action never was a problem.
As pointed out just how many Clone Actions today are 700 foot Print.

That Place some don't care for has lots of 700 Actions from the buy out of the factory ???
I have use them over the years, yes slow and forgetful at times, but always got what I ordered.
I would order a 700 with Custom Bolt in a flash. At to-days prices cheaper than most Clones.

So Ive seen many shops will "true" a 700 up. How far do you go with it and who would you use? After its be reworked does the smith save the info if you wanted a new barrel you could order a "prefit" or does the action have to go back for fitment? Just learning please dont flame me too bad.(lol) I have a RR sitting on the bench. Been buying clones and doing pre fits. Its kind a the easy button. I have a few Remingtons I own it so ive been thinking about sending out.

Southern precision did a good job on the custom actioned rifle, and they appear to be close to you, why not take it to them and let them have a look? Something on the Remington build was the issue, I would want to figure out which part or parts were causing the problem before using them on a new project.

Couple years ago I built a 6 dasher on a stainless Rem 700 action. Put a 28" stainless douglas barrel on it that mic's 0.900 at the muzzle. Put it in a MPA chassis, spec'd out the action screws, etc etc. Never could get it to shoot good. So eventually , I went with a kelbly Atlas action, had southern precision torque down one of their barrels, put it in that MPA chassis , and it shoots great ( my handloads)

It would probably be too wide open a question to ask people to explain why the other rifle wouldn't shoot good, so my question now is what generation Remington actions are worth building a rifle on. Its an S-65xxxxx serial action.

Thinking about building another mild caliber rifle on this action.... havent decided what... target rifle... something. But want to make sure this action isn't junk.

Thoughts appreciated.

While there's no comparison between the Remington and the Kelbly those S prefix actions were very good. I think your experience was barrel related or possibly chambering related. It isn't just about screwing in a barrel and expecting it to shoot well. Too many factors to say what went wrong with your build but I wouldn't suspect the action as the culprit even with that horrible looking bolt.
