What powder/primer for 7 mag?

You may want to narrow things down a little in terms of your intended purpose and bullet weights.

7mm Mag isn't as wide a range as some, but now that more barrels come in modernized faster twists the bullet range has expanded into longer/heavier versions than those original SAAMI ones.

As far as primers, any large rifle magnum primers you can get will work. I like the Federals and CCI, but these days anything you can find is worth trying.

Title says it.

Whats everyone doing 7mag wise? I've never loaded for it.
I sold my 7mm Rem Mag about 1990. I used it for deer hunting in PA in heavily wooded areas. Used 4831 and 4350 powder. I forget which powder was my favorite. With 154 Gr Hornady Round nose bullets I shot many wallet groups with a factory SS barrel. Never used a magnum primer.

I've loaded and shot thousands of 7 RM as it's my favorite magnum and been shooting it since I was 12. The only 3 powders I have ever used were RL22, H4831, and H1000. Any of those 3 will cover any of your needs from 140-180s and give you accuracy, velocity, and consistency the 7 mag is known for. As far as primers, any mag primer will do, but I've used more CCI 250s than anything, followed by Fed 215s.

Recently tried V568 with 180 bergers in my nephews 7 mag it was awesome for accuracy and speed. You will have to have the freebore for the heavies though because its a full case.
Your comment on freebore is interesting. Could be just the ticket for the 7mm Weatherby with it's .378 FB.

40 some years ago I bought a brand new left hand Rem 700 in 7 mag. Got 10 boxes of different bullets, 3 powders, 2 different primers. I was going to find the perfect load for the rifle. All I found was you could shoot out a barrel in a 1000 rounds. Pick 1 or 2 bullets for your application, a proper burn rate powder, and a magnum primer. In 100 rounds or less you should find a load that will work for hunting.

Hmm. There seems to be a pretty wide range of what everyone's tries in the 7mag. Interesting. Im gonna take my buds rifle and work up a new load. Should be interesting.

When we have such a flexible caliber, there will be a wide range of stuff that works.

The only way to focus this down some, was to share your goals and describe the gun.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
