What powder do you use with 223 and 90vld's besides N550???

Wow 33" heavy palma. I'm guessing you're not shooting prone with that pipe? I'd be interested to hear how you do with IMR 4064. Probably one of the most versatile powders on the market......and available, and one of the lowest flame temp powders also. 24.5g of varget seems to be what most shooters can get in the case and stay safe.

Lol , Im am shooting FTR , and the finish barrel will be 32". One of the guys i shoot with here on this fourm built one for his son and it shoots lights out at 600 and really good at 800, 900, and 1K. He has a 1/7 with a Kreiger 30". I think he runs them at 2900 with Lapua Brass.

Will see how she goes.

I have a 6.5 twist Kreiger. I have had really good results with Norma 203 B & 2000MR with the 90 VLD's. At a 710 ft. elevation.

I will let you know how the IMR works when I test, most likely wont happen until september, waiting on defiance action and bartlein barrel.

There's really no mystery to getting the 90's shooting well. I can name 10 powders off the top of my head that will work. Probably that many listed in this string alone. 3 simple things needed. Long barrel, appropriate powder and proper throating where the projectiles gas pressure ring aligns at the neck shoulder junction with a new barrel.

Agree with the posts that 2850-2875ish is all you really need. Provides a comfortable charge of powder to accommodate temp changes during the day. No chance of an unsafe load in HOT afternoon temps.

And gstaylorg is right, shooting a 90 in a bolt gun is like shooting a 177 cal pellet rifle compared to the big 185g-215g 308 bullets. They make for a long weekend shooting prone or Fclass. I'm convinced you're not giving up anything at 600 with the mighty 223. Possibly a slight handicap at 1000 but I've never shot mine that far. Got a 6xc for that.

Im glad we have this discussion going because im in the beginning of my .223 build and was choosing this route. Makes me feel good about my choice.

I've had mine up and running for 5 years. I have a 7,7.2 and a 7.7 twist. My 7.7 is best for accuracy and velocity. I've shot it at 900' elevation. Many people tell me it won't work. This is my second 7.7, wonder why? It's one of the most fun choices I've made with guns.

Agree with you rob221. Built my 1st 223 specifically for the 90g's in march 2006.....9 years ago. Love it. Easy to shoot and not nearly as much money to fed. Can't believe you can buy quality lapua brass from Bullets.com for 43 bucks per hundred and they need no fire forming or tedious workup, keg of powder lasts 2300 rounds, and the projectiles are reasonable compared to the big 308 missiles costing twice as much. All things considered, easy on barrels too. I'm getting about 4000 rounds now on my last one.

It's my go to gun for shooting prone 600 yds.
