what neck turning tool do I need not for f class shooting?

K&M is very impressive, I just watched a rep demonstrate the unit. I really the like the pilot jack !

When I was first doing my research, I was very torn between the k and m unit and the 21st century. The I was very close to purchasing the k and m because of the pilot jack and the ability to add a dial indicator. These features made a world of sense to me. What ultimately won me over with the 21st century was the ability to easily transition the cutter to a motorized unit. I have since made that transition and do not regret it a bit, as said above neck turning is one of the least enjoyable tasks.

Everything in this sport can nickel and dime you to death... I purchased things twice over enough times, that I have adopted the philosophy to buy once and cry once. Or at the very least start with the base unit in the direction I want to go, that allows me to upgrade over time when I see the advantage or need to

According to the rep from IDOD the inside is critical for bullet release and bullet seating. The outside isn't as important as the inside. The outside of the case is just clearance and expands to the chamber. he mentioned the donut on the inside that's why you inside turn. WOW WHAT THE EXPANDER BALL DOES TO THE NECK ! I feel really uncomfortable shooting my recent loads !! But I wouldn't see the results out of F class shooting.

OK question..... how about if I size without my die expander ball and use my mandrel expander?

After researching neck turning tools years ago I bought a 21st Century and have had zero regrets. Before looking around too much I bought a hornady neck turning tool which I still have and have never unwrapped. If you want it Milboltnut I’ll send it your way for 50.00 shipped, it’s just sat on my shelf.

That is the deal I would pounce on. If OP does not want it, I will gladly take it.

I set up a Hornady for every caliber. I grab the one I want, hook up the drill motor and crank them out. Works good enough that I don't have to worry about "donuts," whatever those are.

But if you're not using it to make money on it, it is out of the price range of most shooters. So once again what is YOUR experience with it?

I want to see the IDOD work on the crooked new cases.... I think I used them all and the Pumpkin is the best hand held turner. A real lathe does the best job...... jim

I love mine. Dead nuts when you mic the brass. I turn my 284 and 30 BBM Brass. About to set it up for 6BRA. It’s fast and very very accurate. If you turn necks for multiple calibers it’s worth it. Saves time too. Time is money for me. So it’s worth the money over time. And it’s built to last

I have 2 Sinclair tools and a PMA. One Sinclair is the old nt-3000. I use it to turn my .223 cases. It make a very smooth cut but is a little hard to set. Once set, it makes a beautiful cut. The newer sinclair (dont remember the model) is easier to set up. I use it for my 6.5x47L cases. I replaced the original cutter( the way the cutter was ground, it did not sit parallel with the mandrel) with a carbide cutter from PMA. Now it makes a beautiful smooth cut. I also have them PMA model A and B I use for my 6br. The B cutter to set to cut from .013 to .011, the A cutter cuts from .011 to .010. Beautiful, smooth, straight cuts. The best of the 3. Both of the PMA tools came with carbide cutters. All the mandrels I use are carbide as well. I use the Sinclair shell holders (btw: made by PMA) and drive them with a battery powered drill driver.

A couple of notes: I use feeler gauges to verify my settings on the cutters. I bought one of the Hornady units. It was easy to adjust, but made a terrible cut. A lot of deep gouges that I could not smooth out. The cutter was not ground so it was parallel to the mandrel. The mandrels were too small in diameter. It sits in my box of bad purchases.

I'm glad you are happy with it. As I said it looks like an awesome machine. But still beyond the price tag of most shooters. The necks on those cases look great.

Always cut necks and a little into the shoulders.

why's that? make accuracy worse?

I've not seen neck turning with factory chambers make accuracy worse. It is a nice way to produce both lighter and more consistent neck tension with factory dies though. The drawback in a factory chamber is that neck clearance is usually quite generous, so if you turn your necks you may now have even more, say 0.010" or more of clearance which will work the brass more with each firing cycle and shorten its life.

If your goal is to shoot 0.5MOA consistently, Id recommend high quality, match type bullets first. If that doesn't do it, then I'd try high quality brass (if you aren't already: Lapua, Peterson, ADG, Alpha), then as the final step; I'd get a new barrel. Neck turning isn't something I would put in the "shrinks large groups" category. It's more in the "creates more consistency" category.
