What material to use between barrel surface and barrel vice when changing barrels?

I cant get drywall tape to work as good as target paper on full polish barrels

I don't usually get any marks on steel barrels, and they usually get cerakoted anyway. Carbon is a different deal as they are never painted--guys actually like how the bare carbon looks. So I tape off all the carbon with a low residue tape. I then wrap the areas where the aluminum pieces on the spiders will touch with drywall tape.

Since I started doing that I haven't had any marks on any barrels except one. It was a 1.3 shank stainless barrel and this too big to fit in the Short Action Customs vise with the inserts we currently have. So I used the Viper vise and I didn't get enough wraps of drywall tape on the shank. It left some light marks since that vise really wasn't big enough either. The marks came off when the barrel was garnett blasted before cerakoting. I should have just put the barrel in the vise further down the taper.

I use pieces of the soft strapping material used to put over boats. I clamp down on it and have never had any problems.
