What Is Your Preferred Barrel Brand

The time has come to purchase a barrel for a project. The project is a long action savage rifle 6.5x55. This rifle is for competitions.

My favored form of competition is unknown distance with no sighters, however I do sometimes shoot in local clubs F-class style matches for practice and load development.

Of all the companies that offer pre fit barrels that I know of: Shilen, Criterion, Pac Nor, and McGowan

Which one of these in your opinion is the best?

Thanks for your time and info.

I've had a lot of Shilen barrels over the years, never a bad one. pac nor are good barrels, seen several really nice ones in 30 cal. Know a couple of guys with Criterion barrels and they're good too, Mcgowan, I have no experience with. Just my experience, not running anyones product down at all. A barrel is no place to start cutting costs though.

I love my mcgowens as they are more accurate than my others which include shilens, and criterions etc.Maybe I just got lucky. There is nothing wrong with shilens and criterions,I have just had a good string going. So basically they are all really good barrels.

Thanks for all of the input.

If I had the tools; I would consider getting a barrel other than one of the pre fits like a Bartlein, Brux or Lija to name a few. It simply comes down to the costs and wait time, of course, provided that I do not have to wait to long for the barrel. Besides; the extra 300 to 500 I will save will be put towards the optics.

In the grand scheme of things; I am not a bench rest shooter. I really only care about hitting my target at varying ranges out to 1000 yards.

I will check into the lothar's.

Again thanks for all of your input.

Ditto on the McGowen. I have put quite a few on and feel they are as good as any. Have borescoped most, can't tell the inside from a Krieger. Fast service, Accurate, Friendly folks. Who could ask for more.

Not real sure they are all quality barrels I’m having my Remington sendero upgraded with a Hart barrel it’s chambered in 300 weatherby. It has spiral fluting and and they adding a brake, everything will be redone, we shall see how it shoots
