what is your favorite 6ppc load ?

This should be fun... : ;D
What is your favorite 6ppc load, in detail, powder, charge weight, bullet, seating depth ect ? LV, HV, live varmint?

please add if you have done any kind of winning with the load,if you like.

Please feel free to post some targets from your load. with what kind of range conditions. :)

I've had my ups and downs with my PPC. This past weekend I worked up some varmint loads. I got the 55 Nosler BT's going pretty good with benchmark, but I think the V-max got them once I switched to 8208. These groups were shot at mid day without windflags, mirage was kicking around a bit. The little bit a vertical might have been from that, I still might play with the seating depth but they really performed. The load is kinda stout.

The gun is a go between for both ground hog shoots and shooting ground hogs ;D

Thanks. I still need to do more than 3 shot groups. I've been fighting keeping my PPC in tune with N133. I've tried several loads but that stuff is hard for me to pin down.

My LV Kreiger likes 29.1 grains of 133. Berger 68 grain FB benchrest seated just kissing the lands. 3 thou neck tension.

The trick with 133 is twofold:

1. It likes neck tension.

2. Once you find something that works, take 2 loads .3 grains apart to the bench. If the first isn't getting it done, go to the second.

Thanks for that one GSPV.
well this is my new 6ppc.. three shot groups, jamed .010 into the rifeling..tryed two bullets, 66 fowler..68 precision ballistic BT. the powder, you guessed it RL10x..now first time i shot this rifle, first time i shot this powder, ect ect..
primer fed 205GM. it was a really bad day to try and test a new rifle but you know how it is you just have to shoot it..It was 89 deg F, winds were light but very switchy 4-5 o clock. with a dead calm thrown in. the mirage boil on the target was so bad i could hardlly make out the moth ball..so i just shot a few groups, had to see if it would shoot..I feel its going to be a shooter.. now the target with the 29 gr load and the 66 fowler bullet, i was fighting the mirage and a old protector rear bag that was not high enough for this new stock and feel i dumped that shot out the bottom...Im going to move the whole series .3 gr of powder hotter(28.3,28.8,29.3) and try to shoot in better conditon to see if it was me or the load. with my new minigator rear bag...(100yrd targets)
Forgot to add this is a 10.5lb rifle(LV)..

Thanks big bad bill

FJIM Of the 6 PPCs I've owned or own Vit N-133 works on them all. 29.0-29.5 grains with 65-68 grain bullets. My current varmint load is 29.5 grains V-133, fed 205Ms, Norma Brass, 65 Gr. V Max kissing the rifling. I always have luck starting with the bullet into the lands enough to create a square mark on the bullet. The above load is out of a Sako Varmint/Target Vixen and I'm getting 3350 FPS which is a warm load. This load/gun combo readily shoots better than 1/4" five shot groups with flags. My bench rest guns liked 29.0-29.2 grs with 68 Gr Bart's Ultras. What gun are you trying to load for? By the way, this cartridge and the BR usually have another accuracy node 1.2-1.5 grains of powder lower than these. Good luck.

Thanks dan, the gun im playing with is in the pic above, borden BR action, krieger 13.5 twist barrel, leonard stock.
6ppc, this is not my first 6ppc, this is #3..but i have to be honest i never had much luck getting them to shoot consistantly well, I have not had any luck with N133 and have burned a few pounds of it, but not in this rifle..this rilfe is new, only have 66 rounds threw this one that includes fireforming..it seems it might like that fowler bullet.
I have great success with the RL10 in the 14 twist 6BR and i said i might try it in the 6ppc, I talked to a few benchrest shooters who have shot it and do shoot it. so hey if it will shoot consistantly i will shoot it..but yea it would seem N133 is the powder of choice, but there is a new powder comming..I got a E-mail that said maybe by the end of the summer, I know some BR shooters are shooting it now. I really do think the rifle shot well for the conditions i had and fireforming cases with H322 i shot a group or two bording in the high 100's. so i may have a shooter and that would be nice.

I want to add that the 28.5gr load with the 66 fowler bullet is only three shots, i measured that group and if there had been 5 shots there that group is in the .190's..but trust me the conditions i had it would have been tough to get five there.. there is a reason they are 5 shot groups, hun..lol...but i just wanted to pull the trigger a few times and see how it felt.

I am sorry i have no love for N133, it allmost seems like certain geographic location it's harder to get in tune if you can at all..Like shoot two groups in the zero's and half hour later cant tune any thing at all. I dont want to get into it but i dont like it. sometimes i think certain barrel's just dont like it..I really dont know.

It sounds like you have done your homework on this issue. I guess powders and bullets are only part of the equation when it comes to keeping your rifle in tune. For instance I've never had luck myself with sizing/bumping 6PPC brass. It seems that my best groups come on the second loading of my brass and after that I struggle to get it just right. I think I remember a few well known shooters that just use new brass after that stage for matches. Anyway good luck and I'd be interested to hear more about new powders for the 6PPC. I don't shoot competition any more but the 6PPC remains one of my favorites for obvious reasons.

Here is what you're looking for. Small and round. This is with the 68 gr Berger, 29.1 gr of 133 seated into the lands enough to make a mark. 3 thou neck tension.

IMG_0005_1.jpg

GSPV that looks good..I have around a pound of N133 left, I may give it a try, but i sometimes wonder if i got a bad lot of it or something like that because i just never had it shoot too well..I also never tryed it in this rifle.
Thanks for posting it.

should they look like this one..4 shots out of my 6BR, could not bring my self to shoot the 5th one, you and i both know it would not have gone there.. that was 30.5gr RL10 66 fowler .010 off touching, I have shot a pile of groups in the mid .100's with that load (and one barrel i had).

I really like to go to the range in the mornig,I know it's not a good thing.
well i went this morning. it was cool at 57 deg F .
the RL10 came apart, 28.3,28.8,29.1 was like .450's all vertical..
also shot, N133 28.3,28.8,29.1..well it shot good..cool temp, i feel i could have went up on the powder.
28.3 was .395..28.8 and 29.1 was .250 ish with round with a little vertical.I was jamed .010 which is just kind of square marking the bullet..It's going to get up to 85 deg F today,I have alot to do but im going to try and make it to another range this afternoon where i can load there and try to tune the seating depth ect..
So N133 won..lol..I kind of knew that,I think everyone kind of knows that but i never had it shoot to well, so we will see..

Thanks for posting.

these are 5 shot groups of N133. the inside of the mothball(10 ring) is .400
they are not great but i have to blame myself some. I have not mastered free recoil,Im holding the rifle.
But enough to see it will shoot. I measured them around .470 outside.

I shot competions for years, all my friends passed away, so off I go to the p. dog towns with my bench rifles.

With my 65's, I shoot 26.7g of H322 with a fed 205M, jam the lands hard.

For my varmint loads, I shoot 55-62g bullets case full of H335 and thick cup primer. Groups are in the low 2's or smaller with 3/4" at 300 being no big deal. H335 will give you barrel life like no other powder if you are a varmint hunter, N133 eats barrels.

When I was still making bullets, before I blew out my rotator cuff from pulling the handle, I made light bullets on the .750 J4 jacket in the 40-45g weight(6mm). Pointed them up with a 0.070 Meplat 8 1/2 S ogive, and jammed them hard in the lands with H335. Velocity was 4000 + fps and groups were in the 0's and 1's, extreme spread was less than 6 fps. Obviously, I am not normal.

Thanks for the info keith,, wow you have had the exact opposite experience with H335 as i have.
well i shot H335 in the 14 twist 6BR and all i can say is it shot very well...and when the temp's got up into the 90's and it seemed like nothing would shoot or tune H335 would just shoot down the same hole, I had groups with 65 V max's that were clean round holes at .200..But at 3,450 FPS it was not the fastest but at 1,000 rounds it had blew the throat out , I mean clean out..I'm sure you know how long the neck is on a 6BR well i could not touch the rifleing with a 65 GR bullet no more.. so i quit shooting it for that reason, in favor of RL10 better accuracry,65 gr'er at 3,500 FPS and i got , well i have 1,600 rounds on that barrel and can still touch the throat but it is fire cracked bad. Now i had a guy tell me that he thinks RL10 shoot's great but it is hard on barrels..so who really knows.I say shoot what ever shoots..if they are trying to go down the same hole shoot it..but when you have a new barrel and you have had a bad experience with a powder it's hard to shoot it.

26 grains of H322, Rem BR primer, 75 grain Sierra HP varminter, Sako brass.
I have been getting .2"-.3" @100yds with a 20" barreled 1-10 twist T/C Encore break action rifle (custom shop barrel). I am fighting a 4lb trigger on this thing, I really need to send it off for a rework. I use this rifle at our local 200yard BR matches off a bipod and a sandbag. I am pretty impressed considering what I'm working with.

I had one Hart 15 twist that I put 10K rounds through with my 60g HP at 3550, very tiny groups. On dog towns, I never cleaned without putting 300 rounds down the tube. I think that my load was 30.5g of H335, used a long drop tube.

In the 6 BR at the same time, Gene Harwood, NBRSA director had set a world record for the time using his 60g HP and H335 at 3700 fps.

We were both shooting hart barrels.

I shot the barrels out of several 22 PPC's using H335, takes about 6000 hard rounds, accuracy when I considered them shot out was still in the low 4's, but a bitch to clean the copper out of.

There is a certain barrel maker that does not give the longivity that other barrels may give due to soft steel and shallow lands.

Well, tryed N133, IMR 8208xbr,RL10x, with so so resualts...I was going to shoot in a club match..so i decieded to go H322 with some tips from some BR shooters..and you guys to...Thanks!
Here is the load: lapua case...26.5 grs H322, 66 fowler(new ones). .005 in from just touching..fed 205 GM..
In some very tough conditions at 200 yrds, was the small group at 200yrds..also backed it up with a .337 at 200 yrds. and a .180 at 100 yrds...so i'm likeing H322 right now..lol

That is a .272 at 200 yrd target..in a match(club) but still match conditions.

On the one Hart 15" twist, I put 10,000 rounds on that barrel with H335, it was throated for the 68's, so I was jumping the bullets from 2000-10,000 rounds. At 10,000 rounds, the agg on 6 five shot groups was still .285. I screwed on another barrel because the copper fouling was hard to deal with. Even though I was jumping the bullets, accuracy was still in the 2's forever. The barrel looked horrible inside, but it still kept shooting. Bullets were jumping way out there from 5000 rounds on, fire cracked, and all. As the leade increased, I had to keep increasing the powder charge to make up for the loss of pressure. I did go to the 7 1/2 primer, then the CCI450.

Later on, I started making cases out of PMC 7.62x39 brass, accuracy was fantastic with 2.0g less powder than the small primer cases.

My current load in an unlimited weight of live varmint 6ppc is 26.7g of H322 with a 66g Fowler and 30.5 of H335 with a 55g Nosler. The Fowlers are for targets and the 55g Nosler is hell on wheels for varmints.

For a live varmint rifle, a 6 BR with AA2230 with the 55's is stomping all over 3900 fps in my rifles, and the 65g V Max at 3650 with AA2230 is ungodly accurate, 27" Lilja 12 twist barrel.

I have to agree with the two fellas liking H322. I too am using 26g of H322 with Barts 68g Ultras, the new Norma brass, and a no turn neck. For me this has been the easiest load tune of any gun I have owned. Bob Green did my rifle and I think that has A LOT to do with it. He is highly recommended.

This picture is from my first day of shooting this gun. Before any tuning.
