What is this. (Gun)?????

This gun was inspected by a local gunsmith to see what it was.?
40X action
Barrel with no identification.
Chambered to 35 Remington Mag.
First 1/3 of barrel rifled for 35 caliber.
Second 1/3 of barrel not rifled, but may be tapered to .264?
Last 1/3 of barrel is rifled to .264. Maybe? .264 Rem Mag???
Would enjoy any input or reason for the gun? If it is a gun?

Sounds like you got yourself a good donar action! I bet that barrel would help your tomatos grow better in the spring ;D

Rebarrel it as this was a screw ball design and it is not worth the trouble to even try to expect any accuracy without significant damage to the barrel and reloading for it would only be a guess.

Just a crazy guess, but maybe it is to shoot .35 cal roundballs that get swaged into projectile form? I bet leading would be a mother if so.

My thought would be you have the most accurate, high powered spitball shooter in the world.

Beyond that I haven't a clue.

Ran this by my gunsmith and he thinks it's a harpoon gun. But he's never seen one built on a 40x action. Mostly old Mil actions.

In the 1920's a German gunsmith named Hermann Gerlich developed the priniciple of the "Squeeze Bore" rifle. The theory being that reducing the diameter of the projectile while it moved down the bore would increase its velocity. The principle did work, and squeeze bores were actually used in some anti-tank weapons, though Gerlich had originally used it in hunting rifles. You can find many articles relating to it, though mostly about the anti-tank weapons, by Googling "Squeeze Bore Rifle."

The rifle you describe sounds much like someone's experiment with a Squeeze Bore rifle.
