what is the best ear muffs?

When I shoot my 338/408 Snipe-Tac I insert foam ear plugs prior to putting on my Peltor Tactical 7S Classic Headset. This seems to work well.

Thats like asking which car is best. Do you want molded in the ear, electronic, band on top of the head or behind the head/ How much do you want to spend? Do a Google for, shooting ear muffs. Now wait for all of the opinions.......Ron

I do the same as the BEAR for heavy calibers. No good for matches though, you cannot hear the commands. The extra foam that is. Ron

Most muffs won't reduce sound pressures over 30 dB, that's why many of us use the foam plugs with electronic muffs. Biggest issue will be muff profile or shape as it affects cheek weld / head position on your rifle-of-choice.

My wife bought me a pair of these:

... for Christmas & they're the first pair of muffs I've had that let me get a decent head position with all of the rifles I shoot,Palma, OTC).

I personally have a set of Peltor Tactical S-6 electronic muffs. "SPCLARK" is 100% right about cheek weld. The bigger the muff, the more it gets in the way of cheek weld. I used to use molded plugs when shooting High Power until I got a great cheek weld and the seal between the ear canal and the molded plug broke. Range command was,"FIRE". We were in the sitting position for rapid fire. 10 rounds of .308 to my right and left rapid fire. From then on it was foam plugs with regular muffs. Now it's the Peltors with foam plugs if needed. Some guys just use plugs, however they do not afford any protection to the tiny bones under the skin in front of the ear canal., Talk to an ear doctor ). My hearing is long gone. I was next to a tank in '69 when they touched off a canon round. I try to protect what I have left. My best advice is go electronic, thin profile, and suppliment with foam if needed. My 2 cents worth. Ron
P.S. Get good shooting glasses. Protect your eyes. talk to someone that had a case head separation. I use ESS, and they have an insert that holds my Rx.

Here's a pair NRR 29:

,not sure if the links will work if they're split into two lines - you may have to copy & past the whole line into your browser)

These have the highest NRR ratings I could find.

You could always put these:

with these:

and you pretty much wouldn't have to worry about hearing much of anything...not totally true but good for dramatic effect.
