What is service rifle competition?

So something like a S&W MP sport 2 isnt a "legal" rifle for the class?

I don't see any obvious reason it would violate the rules. What did you have in mind?

It would certainly be a disadvantage compared to rifles that are definitely legal, not an unfair advantage.

edit - I thought the carry handle rule might have gone away but I was wrong. Still in effect for both CMP and NRA.

Mine wears a eotech a512 sight but i would be interested in trying it at some point. Its my 3 gun rifle. Nothing special at all and needs a adjustable gas block terribly. Pic was before i put on the eotech.

Many local matches are shot at reduced distances. For those who hesitate, to get your feet wet, find a local match on a reduced 100 or 200 yard course (this takes a lot of the ballistics and wind reading out of it). Take your house gun, two (or preferably 4) magazines, a sling, a mat or a piece of carpet, and whatever ammo you have. Learn the routine, get your body accustomed to the positions, get some snap caps and dry fire (I have black dots taped on the walls all over the house, my wife thinks I'm nuts). Once you start seeing the limitations of your equipment, improve your equipment. In the meantime the regular practice and the mild stress of competition with yourself will make you a MUCH better rifleman.

I'm fairly sure you'd have a technical problem with that exact rifle in Service Rifle because the guard is neither the as-issued round thing or a quad rail.
The chances they wouldn't let you shoot are close to zero. They'd either say 'close enough' or at worst record your score as Match Rifle. Presumably if you went to a shoot with that rifle it wouldn't be with the idea of winning Service Rifle anyway.
If you went to a CMP Games match I think that would be fine for Modern Military.

btw - does that pistol look like a plastic toy in person or is it the picture? :)

If you showed up to one of my matches I for sure would have no issue letting you compete. If it was an EIC match you would have to shoot out of competition if anyone protested since your rifle has a few parts that don’t comply with the Rulebook. Most would welcome the additional leg meat especially if one shy of awarding an additional leg. No big deal.

To make it strictly legal you would need to do the following:

1. A1 or A2 pistol grip
2. Regular round handguards or a float tube / rail
2A. If a rail then picatinny must be full length @ 12 o’clock and half rail length @ 3, 6 & 9 oclock. Sling swivel must be fixed 8.0 + /- 0.5” from forward edge of mag well if attached to rail or handguard.
3. Lower would have to be swapped to one that has a removable trigger guard. Trigger guard has to be a standard straight one. (Lame rule).

Nobody has mentioned the DCM/CMP Infantry Trophy Match where 6 man teams are issued 864 rounds. Learn all about it in:

Barrels get really hot and people have burned bad.

Watching Garands shoot 24 shots in 50 seconds into a 12" group at 600 yards is something else. Almost as good as doing it. Been there, done that.

384 rounds of ammo....

NTIT is just about the most fun you can have with an AR, M1A or Garand in 50 seconds.

If you are a Michigan resident and would be interested in participating on a team or learning more about the match please PM me. I always seem to have a difficult time guaranteeing enough shooters to field 2 teams @ Perry.

Find yourself a CMP clinic, they will teach how to use your equipment and then practice this in a John granard match. ...they are fun and addictive....
I shot my first match in a loaner coat and loaner sling .....our local club will hold a CMP clinic and match in March if you are near north east Indiana.....at our Thursday night practice we shoot an NRA 50/80 ......
This is mental game....relax, but know the match and be ready for your string/relay.....do not thinkmtjis is an equipment game....once the game bites you , you will want some better stuff then you probably own , but go to the match, tell the match director your have no clue and he will pair you up with someone to help you and you will find this way too much fun......

I am in a bad place....2 1/2 hours away from camp Perry 2 1/2 hours away from Attabury....., plus my local club.....

Only down side to 100 yard matches....no target pit duty....you haven't lived till you have pulled targets at Perry for "rattle battle" .....bullets are just as loud as they pass over your head as the rifles are on the line....

Go out and try it!!! And do try with irons your first several matches....

So you can shoot CMP, swing by the house for a little break, then shoot NRA. That’s terrible. . .:p

That canik pistol is by far the best pistol i have ever owned or shot. Yes the crekote on the slide does look plasticky. I highly recommend anyone to take the tp9sf canik for a spin though, trigger is much better than the s&w mp or Springfield xd and it is a service duty pistol.

Have 3 plaques doing that...1995, 1996 and 1998. Like a dummy, I put down the squirt gun and shot Palma.

There are "feel good" things that happen in the DCM/CMP clinics.

M16 rifles were first used in them at the 1971 Nationals. I got to help a woman get into the 3 positions with one, loading then shooting. She did very good for an 85 year old. So i asked why she may have done so well,

She said her husband recently passed. She went with him to Camp Perry and other ranges around the USA for over 20 years after he retired from the service. But his Garand was too big and heavy and it kicked too much. When she learned this smaller, lighter mild kicking rifle was going to be used, she decided to go to the National Matches and shoot one.
