what is maximum Rem 700 threads can be opened up?

I am curious if there is a standard do not exceed number on opening receiver threads. I've heard of very reputable gunsmiths opening 700's to 1.085.
Just curious if there's a max for a reasonable safety allowance.
I see that most actions seem to be similar in thickness i.e. 700 is 1.350ish with 1.062 threads savage is super close to both those numbers. So it seems there is more to it than the designer wanted this thread.
Thanks for any info.

1.085 is what LRI uses across the board no matter how close the existing thread is. I think it is a reasonable thing to do in a high-volume shop like Chad runs as he claims this will cleanup even the worst Remington action. I use 1.080 myself as I've never had one not cleanup with that and I have a shop-made guage for that. I mark them as such so anyone else later on knows what's going on.

What is that hunk of steel between the barrel and receiver?

Called a recoil lug or block, common with actions of this design by several manufacturers.

Otherwise, with a round-bodied action all that keeps the action in the stock is the screws used to secure it... and their can be two, or three, but that's not enough steel to hold up well over time even with pillar bedding.

I think Butch was being deliberately obtuse. It is a big honkin recoil lug.

I like the Badger Ordnance recoil lugs. 0.3125 thick.

So just as a hypothetical question could you safely open a 700 to say large shank savage threads 1-1/16x20 ( I would think so since savage dies it) or Mauser threads or such. How much thickness does the outer ring need?
I don't fully inderstand the different torque stress that goes on in this part of the rifle during firing. Is it simply just fastener torque that needs addressed or is there a lot of flexing stress's and such to account for?
Again I have no intention of doing it just trying to up my understanding of it all.
Also the electro pencil of new threads is a superb idea thank you for sharing that.

I thought the Remington threads were already 1.0625 and the Mauser is 1.100.

Forget the safely part, the answer is no, they're the same diameter.

Barrel and receiver is a joint held under tension. The receiver is the weakest point. Remove metal from the receiver, you weaken the receiver and the joint BUT I'm fairly certain the designers of these actions built in a safety margin. We could argue all day long how much to remove is too much but I've never heard of a 700 coming apart torqued to standard torque specs opened up another .020 to .025.

That is the recoil transfer mechanism. You need one that big on a .458 Lott so it won't flex and so you don't burn up a lot of ammo sighting in.
Dang , I thought my shoulder was the recoil mechanism ! I wish it was made out of steel or at least younger .

Don't you mean savage large shank 1.125-20
1 1/8-20 o_O
