What is it about the .308 that makes it the best cartridge for any type of competition shooting?

I knew this would get some feathers ruffled. At least you did not say the 6.5 creed instead of 308.

To me it is a round that is very good but not the best any anything. Well maybe having a barrel life in some competitions that is best described as amazing. The 308 is a round that can get a person started doing almost any type of rifle shooting. It is good enough to allow some real learning about shooting before one sets up for a specific type of shooting.

Best? Not at all. Very good? Yes.

I shot the 308 for years in F-T/R, did well, set an 800 record, which stood for while. Decided to try something different, built a 6 Dasher, shoot it in F Open and Sling, love it. Less recoil, more accurate IMO, and easier to shoot. Nothing wrong with the 308 for sure, just variety is the spice of life.

It's a easy caliber for someone starting out in competition: great barrel life, easy to find nodes with proven loads with a large choice of bullets, and decent accuracy. It is my choice for the Zombie Apocalypse :)

We all know that it is, so no need to get into that part. But what specifically is it about the .308 that makes it so awesome? Is it magic? Because when I shoot my .308, it feels like magic.
I feel that the 6mmBR is much better than the 308 at anything,,,it is very close to a PPC for short range ,,it is the parnet ctg for the Dasher which is begining to show its merit at F-class,,,,it is stellar at 600yds and very competitive at 1000 yds ,,,the 308 shure is not,,,,so in my estimate the BR is more of a universally competetive ctg than the 308,,,,just my humble opinion,,,Roger

Roger,
I don't want to discount your feelings, as I know that can be very hurtful to some people. However, we are discussing facts here, and the fact that the .308 Winchester is the greatest cartridge ever devised by man is indisputable.

Thanks,
Erik

HaHa,,,dont worry about hurting my feelings ,,,,,you aint much of a shooter if you cant take a little dissappointment or ridicule,,,,however ,,,you need to get out of the stone age with your cal. choice and see what is winning in events that the 308 is not required to compete ,,,,Roger

All in good fun, of course. That said, I do see .308's winning against "superior" cartridges in the matches I go to...

I'm tired of this "it only wins when it's required to compete" business. These are the facts:

1) The .308 is the greatest competition cartridge ever created. Period. I think this has been firmly established.
2) Therefore, if a shooter competes in a competition that requires a .308 and wins, it's because he beat a field of .308 shooters, all of whom were shooting the greatest competion cartridge ever created. This is quite an accomplishment. It's not like competing against a bunch of 6.5s.

I especially love the fact that I can get up to 10 reloads (and get to trim it almost everytime) before having to discard that expensive brass imported just for me on the backs of reindeer all the way from Finland ;)

As I've said before... some like the 308, some like the 6.5, lets meet in the middle okay??? It's time to bring old glory out of the field for a minute and into bench shooting. Granted, I am pretty sure when I'm home alone and feeling frisky you'll find me on the dark corners of the internet... drooling over them all. just not the nasty 7mms...

If we met in the middle, we'd wind up with a 7-08, which as the name implies, is just a lesser .308. And it's metric. Nobody wants that.
