What is it about the .308 that makes it the best cartridge for any type of competition shooting?

308win is a great round but competitive at long range 1000yd a maybe.

I only shoot prone NRA highpower, fullbore and occasionally smallbore.
I shoot a lot of .308 Palma. Also run two 6.5/284s. In a prone match an any rifle is not a guaranteed win. Eric, you ruffled some feathers.

Well what a Post ! The .308 got it's start for the Military looking for less weight over the 30.06 ?
They got that idea from the Germans in WW2 ? The Germans came our with a short 8mm Kurtz .
The .308 shined like a new Dime.

I have shot NRA HP for years and the M-14 was and is still a Jewel. ( Had a Winchester 1967 1968)

I still shoot Palma today .308 ,155's iron sights.
The joy of cleaning a target at 800 ,900 or 1000 yards will give you a woody for the Day....
I say for a Old Guy it is a Gas !!! Long live the 30.06 Kurtz......

As a positive note, you can make 260 Remingtons out of them. I mentioned that the 308s left a lot to be desired when ranges get much over 500yds on Snipers hide 12-15 years ago. I was the dumbest most un-American, ass hole in the world.

It’s because new shooters can always find barely used ones for sale all the time as so many shooters move on to better alternatives.

I'm assuming this is a ruffling up the mob thread and not an exact detail so this is my short answer. Not to mention I am completely certain that you already know the answer in a lot more depth then I do. There's good rifles (barrel, actions, etc) and good chambering's. The 308 seems to get itself into a lot of good rifles and therefore the 308 is good. Buy an expensive gun then fix it up further, a lot more logical for most then buying a cheap 30-06 and fixing it up, statistically the numbers lean towards the former. Try going to Cabelas and buying the latest and greatest varmint rifle or long range sniper looking setup in a 270win or wby... which just so happens to be superior to all else. Popularity dictates a lot! I do like them all and appreciate with the utmost respect those who shoot competitively and can knock the socks off me when I shoot a 3k gun and their shooting a budget gun...

I shoot a 308 as it's either that or a 223 as I shoot FTR.
And where I shoot it's between 300 to 1000 yards. I have only been in this a short time. And I figured the FTR was the place to start.
I thought the open guys were the ones that had done it longer and were more experienced.
It is a bit more challenging in the wind to shoot.

The only competitions the 308 is competitive in are the ones its the only one allowed. Even the sniper type competitions where it fits the part to be authentic its not even competitive

You need to visit a F Class match with top level competitors. .308 scores are getting real close to open scores

i've been around and built a few of their guns. the main question you have to ask is: if they changed the rules to allow any cartridge in f/tr.... how many would still shoot a 308? how many would switch before the next match? THEN ask how many use a 308 in open?

"Jack of all Trades" it just does almost everything well, maybe not the best choice for any one thing, but it hangs tough with most.
