What is a "Medium" Action?

I do believe in Captain Crunch.
So I bought this stock: https://www.unknownmunitions.com/product/mcmillan-nimrod-stock/
It's a McMillan stock with a "Medium" inlet. Unknown Munitions states that it works with the BAT Vesper Medium and Defiance XM+, Lone Peak, Zermatt, and Stiller.


But what makes an action a 'Medium' action. Is it just a short action with it's eject and feed ports lengthened and a different bolt stop? Is the overall footprint of a medium the same as a short action?

I asked the guy at unknown munitions if a Kauger CRS short action would work in this stock along with an M5 Oberndorf floorplate... He said yes, but I'm starting to get worried that it might not all be compatible and/or feed correctly.

My first worry. Will the Kauger CRS short action line up and screw into the stock correctly?

Next worry is on feeding. I plan on getting a Baney Box with it (3.100" COAL). The first task for this new build is just range shooting 6BR, and I will be single loading those rounds. However, I do plan on getting a 2nd barrel at some point like a 7mm08 or something. Does my plan sounds like it will feed the 7mm08?
 
Medium bolt holes are .100 wider, also takes special medium bottom metal that is also slightly longer.

The mediums are perfect for the short action mags (wsm/saum/6.5prc) and especially if using a longer heavier for caliber bullet.

I’m not familiar with the Kauger action but if it’s a true short action, it won’t work without some modifications to the stock. Good luck!
 
Those 'medium' actions that stock is inletted for have a 6.843" screw spacing. The standard 'short action' 700 foot print screw spacing is 6.500".

I got bad info from the stock seller. Who knows maybe I wasn't clear in what I was asking since all this inletting and bottom metal stuff is new to me.

Hopefully it hasn't shipped yet.

Why can't everything be as easy as a Tikka! One inlet, one size mag, one size action. The Henry Ford method. You can have any color you want as long as it's black

It's exhausting trying to find a rifle stock in a pattern I want that is actually in stock. I need instant gratification! This is the USA after all. We invented instant gratification consumerism.

Anyway, I'm not actually angry or anything. Just enjoying my coffee while my dog is chewing on her new antler while I contemplate my first custom build hiccups.

I guess my options are
  1. buy a medium action from a different mfg, requiring very long wait time or a mfg I'm not interested in
  2. order the long action version of the stock linked to above and run a long action Kauger CRS (not sure if they offer it in LA)
  3. if I get a LA Kauger, then I need to go searching for stock again because I passed over all of those before I found the nimrod
  4. order the exact perfect stock that I want and wait 8 months
  5. take up competitive pumpkin chucking and quit the rifle sports.

That's the rub though. I decided on the kauger short action and the stock choices of good quality (that I can put my hands on in the next 4 weeks) are slim to none.

1st world problems, as they say
 
Since you're using a short action your chances for finding a stock on the shelf are much better than trying to find a medium length stock. If you're interested I have a short action AG Composites adjustable Alpine hunter stock that I purchased for a build that never materialized. M5 bottom metal inlet and Proof sendero barrel channel.

Did my best I promise! :)

I'm confused as well. I have never owned or even used anything rem 700 based. At the time I found the stock, I had never heard of 'medium actions' Just Rem 700 S/A and L/A. So far, this 'Medium' stock was the best I had found with the features I was looking for and also being available to purchase without a special order.

So I emailed the guy at Unknown munitions and asked him if a Kauger CRS Short action with extended mag cut + M5 Oberndorf bottom metal + His medium action Nimrod stock would all be compatible. He said yes. He also said the type of internal box would depend on the cartridge I was using.

Based on that answer, I assumed 1) the information would be accurate 2) a medium action design was basically a short action with modifications for ejecting/feeding a bit longer cartridges.

So I ordered the stock and M5 medium Oberndorf bottom metal.

Then I started researching internal mag boxes. Which led to more information about 'medium actions' and I started to get a funny feeling something was off. And I posted here.
 
Got it. Hopefully you can cancel the stock order. Take a look at Red Hawk Rifles and see what they might have in stock. Also, Greyboe has some good patterns.

In hindsight, I do feel like a dummy :)

Unknown munitions guy probably missed the short action part of my question because it's obvious to anyone versed in these things that a square peg cannot go into a round hole.
 
There are plenty of options, but most are only available via special order/back order.

I guess if I had to boil down my preferences:
  1. m5 inlet
  2. high comb or adjustable
  3. Bottom of the butt with low angle and hopefully flat-ish
    1. I'm looking for something that will track well under recoil in the prone position on a squeeze bag
  4. no butt hook (see #3)
  5. Vertical style grip
  6. Thumb shelf preferred
  7. High quality mfg
  8. Not heavier than 3lbs
  9. No Chassis
  10. No backorders/special orders
  11. Under $1K

I think the nimrod is kinda a modified Game Warden LR. I cannot find the LR in stock anywhere.

I am having a hard time finding a single R700 S/A M5 inlet in stock at stocky's. In fact, I'm not sure I have seen anything in stock. I wonder what their lead time is for backorders. I do like that VG2 and the Vertical Grip hunter profiles.
