What is a great handgun forum?

Until you gain experience, the problem with a lot of forums is sorting the bullcr@p and the parrots from solid advice. Here is as good a place as any, and better than most. I do like the 1911 forum. It is quite possible to load good pistol ammo without spending a ton of money.
Re-loading manuals often give good instructions for new guys too. Good luck, it's a lot of fun.

Ha ha. That reminds me of the late '80s, before the WWW took off, when all Internet forums were text on Usenet. I got active on rec.guns (where I first met our own Toby B.) Usenet was overrun by college kids, and some city kids were spreading their wings away from the nest and going wild by actually touching, then acquiring, a real gun for the first time in their sheltered lives. So rec.guns hosted a lot of hilarious newbie questions. I came up with the prototypical hilarious newbie question:

Cop yells "Drop the gun!" What should I do?

Smith&Wesson forum probably contains the largest collection of knowledgeable, helpful and overall in general nice people hand gun wise...well, at least they did as of a few years ago. The problem was the management. The cat that runs that show has a raging stiffy for anything political. I typed the name "Hillary" in a post, not in reference to the queen and honestly not political at all. I don't even remember what it was about now. I got locked out and was told I "needed a few days off to think about political posts". Needless to say a few days turned into years and I am still thinking about it.

I'll say this about the S&W forum, if you are looking for information about an old Smith wheelgun you might have, those guys eat, drink, and sleep those things. Their marketplace seems very active, too. I just acquired my first Smith, a cherry '70s Model 19 Combat Magnum, and found them very friendly and helpful.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions everyone. I now have plenty to wade through so I'm not likely to run out of stuff to read in a hurry!
Went to the club last night for my first scored shoot and was better than some of the guys that had been shooting for a while. Still lots of room for improvement tho.
Use a CZ 75 which I liked so once I get a dozen shoots completed I'll have a better idea of what to buy.

I'll start an new post for any new questions I have.

What is up with RugerForum? I can't login, can't retrieve/reset my password, can't contact an admin, and can't register a new account, and the newest member, "Ballistic556" has been listed for months, and maybe a year or longer. With that said, there is current activity there.

That's definitely changed if it's smithandwessonforums.com you're thinking of... heck, they have a dedicated 'News Links and Political Talk Forum' now. Do a search for 'Hillary Hole' and you'll pull up about five pages of refs....

Great resource for all things Smith & Wesson.

Some of it depends on your goals of using the handgun. If you're considering IPSC/USPSA with a 1911, then the Brian Enos and 1911 forums are great. If you're leaning towards a different brand, then those will help you.
Before you buy a new handgun, talk to lots of people at the club. Learn, then buy (rather than buy then figure out you really should have bought something else). And you may find a great used handgun to get you going.
I did a lot of IPSC for about 10 years and its fun. Started with a Kimber .45, then switched to a S&W 686+ with moon clips and did even better in Limited class.

Yes I really liked the CZ and it was my first choice when initially looking but decided the G34 Gen5 was a better option due to being $800 cheaper. Wrong. No one ever regrets buying quality.

Exactly my plan but I wanted to at least have some idea if asked. After the 6 months probationary period I reckon I'll have a very good idea of the best option. So far I'm liking the Shadow 2.

I can get a 6 year old Dillon 650XL with dies, case feeder etc for $1600. New here they are $1399 without dies or anything else.
To me this seems to good to let go.

I know lots of people drink the blue cool aid, and Dillon does make a nice press, with great customer service.
I have a Hornady Lock N Load progressive, and they are great too, with great customer service also. And caliber changes are a lot easer/cheaper on a Hornady. One powder measure for all calibers using Lock N Load inserts for each caliber, or the micrometer style insert like I have.
I've been away from pistol shooting for a while. Before buying a CZ, look into accessory availability. A 1911 from Kimber/Springfield/etc will have tons of mags/sights/holsters/grips/etc available to chose from. Maybe the CZ does to, but accessories are a strong consideration for what gun to buy.
Brian Enos forum would be a good bet for most action pistol games you might take part in.
