What is a 20-223a?

Sure is a cute cartridge though!

looks good! Love the 20’s. Was seriously thinking of doing a 20 prac or 20-223ai but decided to go to the 20 tactical and boy let me tell you, absolutely 0 regrets there! Way faster then expected, handles pressure well must be due to case and design, super super accurate. Might have to try a 20-223ai on the next barrel for comparison

What speeds are you achieving? What powder brand?..have you noticed accuracy difference between slower burning powder than faster burn rate, per say?..
It just seems to me that LT32 had more accuracy potential but less fps" but the sd's weren't there,.as xbr8208 has super speed and great sd's but lacks accuracy?. Maybe is the primer I am using, crap" there are not many out there to choose. I have a huge pack of CCI 450's and Remington 7.5 on hand which is what I have used for all my small rifles..

Maybe a regular CCI400 or federal small!...
Maybe platapus can shine in on this one!

The three powders I have used for 20-223AI are Benchmark, 8208 and H4895. My reamer cuts a .040 FB which works well with the 40 gr bullets. My best results are with Sierra 39BK and barrels are 11 twist; usually seat bullets about .006 - .007 into lands. You will be surprised at results with H4895 (about 28 grs), try it but back off a bit for starters to 26.5 - 27.0 grs. I use 27.0 for FF in Lapua or IMI brass.

Try backing the loads off a tad and start with the bullet touching the lands. Secant ogives many times prefer to be touching or even jammed.
I am currently 0.005 of the lands, and is usually where I always start with any of my rifles.
I will do, what you and platapus have stated.
Since 25.5grns xbr8208 has proven to have very low SD's I will drop to 25 and jam bullet in to the lands..
Work my way down and see what it shows me...

I dont have any h4895, but do have ARcomp which is equal in burn rate..
I'll stick to xbr8208...if I wont get it dialed in within 30rounds ..will change to ARcomp.

i have the 35 bergers up to 4150 on my ladder test and the 39 blitzkings at 4100 on my ladder. The node seemed to be at 4050fps with the 35’s and haven’t finished that load yet (this week should wrap it up) and the 39’s seemed to be floating right at 4000 for there node. This barrel doesn’t seem to be picky with the 39’s at all. It shot from 3900-4100fps all in a 1” group st 100 and minus the first shot dropped them all into .3. I have two barrels spun up and this one is a 1:10 twist which seems to prefer the 39’s so far. The other barrel is a 1:11.

My bolt wont allowed me to load any higher without having primer draw back into the firing pin.
But I got to say. WOW! Some impressive speeds...
What powders have you loaded and tested?
My first rodeo into the wild 20's and I am completely looking forward to it"....

On my last build it was a complete burn out..
Had my gunsmith build a 22 nosler on a mini Howa action and it totally flunked my expectations.
Brass was and is doo doo!...

But this one has lots of potential....I can see on the first shots...it just wants to shoot..but it hasn't spoken to me yet!

my bra is doing the same. I know it has a bit more but primer flow is definitely holding me back.
I’m using 8208 in it. I used it in my last barrel as well. Clean, fast, accurate, decent sd/es but not the best I’ve had.

well keep us posted.

Have not had the chance to re-test the 20ackley been busy I have everything here and ready to GO! But the holidays and work dont give me any slack. If all goes as it looks I'll be off this coming friday so time to test then.
Mr platapus thanks for your advise, Much oblige!
This 20 cal really wants to shoot I got a good set of loaded ammo with bullet jump from + 0.002 jam to - 0.25 hope i can dial it in fast and get ready for my upcoming build. I hate having to rifles done one after another ,..gives me the itch to shoot them both and seems I loose my patience.

If primer flow is a problem, you may need to get the firing pin bushed. Contact "carlsbad" on this forum, he does excellent work. You should be able to get above 3900 with 8208 or Benchmark, and a little more with H4895 if you can find some. Your 450 or 7 1/2 primers should work well with this cartridge; I use Fed205.

Looking GOOD Brad! Looking Good!

What Twist did he go with!

Can't wait for the (20-.223AI) 20 Sploader Reamer to come in!
