What is a 20-223a?

I've got alot of different 20 cals and I've never seen the need for nothing but zero freebore up to 40 grain bullets even in my 20BRAI with the long neck 6br case and 55's takes very little freebore

Thank you! I would have thought that was the case

Learned (after the fact) that no freebore is necessary with 32-40 grainers, as others have stated. If the gun is used for high volume shooting, normal throat wear will eventually create “freebore” anyway. Might as well get as much use of the bore as possible.

My .02. The 10 twist works fantastic with 40 Vmax and 39 BK. I have 4-500pc of .204 Norma brass, so I don't see that I have any issues with brass. I load 8208 to 3800, and that's plenty good for me. I used a no trurn reamer with a shorter throat, so I can still shoot factory Hornady 40 grain if I choose, and it runs 3900. I am that one weirdo that only runs the .20 P to 36-3700 in a 22" barrel, and a 32 grain around 4k. Lake City reformed lasts a long time. The .204 is faster, but the .20 P is just more Practical.

I'm thinking I will offer the 10 twist barrel and that will work for all the 20 cal offerings.

I would have to find an alternate barrel supplier for that...

I am not sure I am intersted in going down the 20 cal rabbit hole.
I think a 10 or 11twist would be fine for 32-40 gainers in the 20prac, 204, 20VT etc.
Only thing I wonder about is some of the thin jacket 32's in a 10 after a barrel gets some throat wear on say a 204

I just finished my 20-223 Ackley build. Found my self a new old stock Remington/zastava model 799 in 223, pulled the oem barrel off and got a 10twist LV contour. Had a bit of trouble figuring out how to neckdown 223 to 20cal with out issues and that has been taken care of.
Got plenty of 40 Vmax's and custom 45's from blackhole bullets...will fire form with the Vmax and keep them Blackhole bullets for load development.
Using LT32 as fire forming load at 24grns, once I get my cases formed, will start load ladder test using Xbr8208.
I'll give a range report .

I've just finished fire forming 200 federal 223 Remington brass to 20-223 Ackley..very cute little case..so far, so good" actually better than I expected.
Minute of a squirrel at 100 yards. Was not expecting excellent results while fireforming..
So I will skimm the neck's a little and perform a load ladder test with xbr8208..
Will report back this weekend.

Very cool. :)

It's a 20-223a no turn neck zero freebore.
Oooops never mind" didn't see your earlier post.
I am sure you will like it. While fireforming I surely took my time shooting didn't want to get my rifle too hot. I got access to 1200 acres that cattle have been moved from and still see some ground squirrel's and the occasional crow. Got to say I am really impressed with the ballistics them 40grn Vmax has* it compares almost equal to my 22-250 shooting 55 Vmax's...and I am not even close to what this 20-Ackley can do!.
Any body has a start load of xbr8208 on this case?
Was thinking of also starting with 24grn and work my way up. Anyone knows what max would be?

I'd figure I would try and resurrect this post.
Since I have had some outstanding results, but limited experience with it. I took to the range today and set a load ladder test on this 20 Ackley of mine I was limited to go higher than 25.5grns of xbr8208 do to the fact I started to get primer flow back onto the firing pin hole.
So my loads started at 24grns and as high as 25.5grns as I couldn't shoot the rest. Never saw pressure signs just primer flow back.
But as the load increased the accuracy got better and consistent speed gain.
So I wont make this thing long
25.5grn xbr8208 on the magneto speed, shows as follows
#1 3915fps
#2 3920fps
#3 3931fps
#4 3918fps
#5 3922fps
This is federal 223 Remington brass neckdown and neck turn. And as good as this numbers look...... (on paper is a whole different thing.)

I tried to get my target back from the range but some fools with AR's where getting on my nerves.
The group was possibly 1 Moa or larger
Not very promising.
Here are some pictures of the rig

Those are very decent numbers as far as SD/ES. I would play with seating and I'd bet you see the groups tighten up.

40gr bullet?

40gr bullet?
Yes at this point 40grn Vmax's only..
And yes I will play with bullet depth.. my gunsmith got a rental reamer from 4d reamer rental.
And made me a chamber cast ..it shows to be a 0.020 leade from what I can measure.
And I always start 0.005 from touching the lands.
Will slowly back off , and retest!.

By any chance has anyone used ARcomp on this case? Almost equal burn rate with higher density and may give more fps and less pressure?..
