What has made group size shrink since the early 80's

The equipment. Example. I quit shooting muzzle loaders around 1985. Two years ago I decided it was time to get into it again. I thought, wow, as I wandered around the muzzle loader rifle section. I didn't know what 75% of the items were!! The last time I had that feeling was in high school when I opened my Freshman algebra book!!

I think all you guys are wrong!!
It was my ability to convince my wife to let me spend more time and money on my hobby.
Got to run now the wife wants the windows washed before I go to the range.

you are all correct,,,it is the combination of bullets,,bbl,,powder,,stock,,wind flags,,,,,,,but to answer the question "I" think THE big thing is having scopes that hold their zero,,,(or are frozen),,,I have shot short range since the early 70's and started long range ~2002,,,I remember at first I was chided about having a 36x scope,,,especially at 600-1000yds,,,,many said a 24 or 8x25 variable was all you would ever need !!!! hahah,,,today if you arent shooting almost twice that much magnification you are being ridiculed,,hahaha,,,,,more important than magnification is the ability of these new generation scopes to track reliably and uniformly and stay there and not waver around to settle down,,,,Roger

Ok, I'd suggest better barrel manufacturing techniques, improved bullet design and more consistent construction, better knowledge base due to the availability of information, generally a higher standard in equipment manufacture etc etc.

You nailed it.

Lot's of things I'm now trying for the 1st time, bought a Chrono the other day have lots to do there also, Used a chrono long time ago but didn't get my moneys worth just measured speeds and that's it, no testing really of any kind

Money doesn't hurt though! lol
You need - Time, Money, and Talent - You have to have at least some of all or it isn't going to work 2 out of 3 isn't going to cut it.

Money doen't equal smaller groups. Some of the best shooters I know are normal working class with limited budgets. Dedication equals success in my opinion.
Without money they wouldn't of been able to buy the good products . They wouldn't of be available.
You can put all the dedication you want into junk and you still have junk. lol Larry

Roger that Larry. I may be misquoting but someone made this pronouncement about winning in drag racing. "Cubic inches doesn't win races, you need cubic dollars". I think it was Kenny Bernstein.
