What Happened??

As a kid, back in the day of tree-laden fence lines and brush piles, our home county had a plague of groundhogs. The county offered 50 cents for each pair of ears brought in to the courthouse. No such thing as the varmint hunting trend we see today, so hardly anyone shot them. I knew several farmers that welcomed me and my trusty Remington 510 because of all the damage and were only a bike-ride away. Boxes of .22 LR HP ran 40 cents each. It was a poor outing that didn't net me 6 - 8 groundhogs. Nearly every cent went back into cartridges purchased at our local drugstore.

At the city dump, I loved to shoot rats. My cousin and I didn’t get a thing for it, but it was a great “play day” when we rode our bicycles to the dump and back.
What a good read........... It really brings back them good ole days.

Around here the hog pens would get rats tunneling all around them. We would stomp the tunnels in til the rats jumped out and ran then we would shoot at them with 22s. Great sport and fun - we got most of them. The hogs liked them rats to:eek:

Close but there are still some good Democrats somewhere it’s the far left the ultra liberals and we have a lot of those that call themselves republicans

P.S
It’s why I don’t identify with either party
I’m a hard core right wing conservative constitutionalist
The last hard core right wing conservative constitutionalist to run for president that I know of was H. Ross Perot. He ran as an independent, and all he really accomplished was to siphon off enough conservative votes to get Clinton elected. I sympathize with your views and feel the same as you, but if you're really a conservative you gotta vote Republican for your vote to matter. Especially in the congressional votes, because all that matters in the House & Senate is head count by party. With all their flaws, of which there are plenty, the Republican Party is still a lot better for America than the Democrats, who have 99% sold out to the radical left.

The owners of the cafe in my hometown would give us kids a 50 rd box for glass bottle trade in. Been awhile but I think a 12 pack of bottles. Owners kept the shells in the basement. Didn't care if we were 10,12,16 years old, because they knew all the parents.
When I was a boy a box of shorts was a quarter, longs were 35 cents and LR fifty cents. Minimum wage was 75 cents an hour, just to put that in perspective.

What happened was farmers began to clear the brush along their fence lines which diminished the cover for the varmints. I remember farmers and the county going along the fences with tractors armed with 6 foot sickle bars cutting and chopping the brush way back in the 1960s.

Back in the early '60s, I saw chain gangs doing that work. Kept them busy and out of trouble. And, those were the trusties.

I remember going into the local sporting goods store as a young teenager and paying $7 for 500 rounds of 22LR ammo. With a $10 bill my brother and I would grab a brick and still have enough left for a couple sodas and candy bars then go out and shoot for hours

When I was a kid, our postman was also in charge of cemetery maintenance. It was overrun with ground squirrels. Holes everywhere. He offered me a bounty of 10 cents each, warning me to be VERY sure not to strike any headstones. I spent a day with my savage/ anschutz and brought back over 70. He paid up, but decided it would be a nickel after that.

I concur,
I voted for George H in 92 and that liberal progressive Republican John McCain in 08 for just the reasons you pointed out.
On a side note my Dad knew some of the gals down at Speer bullets back in the day and about once a month I use to get a couple bulk packages of 22 Rimfire it had everything they produced so I had to sort them, even though the stingers weren’t very accurate in my Winchester I loved the added stopping power and explosive mess they made. Here on the ranch we were over ran with ground hogs and I spent many a hour stalking them.

I also remember 200 dollar rent, dollar gas, and 100 dollar paychecks. I can more readily afford ammo and components at today’s prices than I could in the so called good ol days.

Tunneling rats on the hog feed lot. ?22 LR round nose. Oh yeah.
Ca 1966, my college Physics 100 level prof had a 52B iirc that he loaned to me to try out. Went 245 miles upstate to my Uncle's farm for the test run...I really wanted that jewel.
He had feeders on an augur on a long concrete slab, south side of the 3 hog bays. Rats had tunneled to a fare thee well.
I would sneak around the big blue Harvest Store, pieing the holes and shooting the targets through the arc, open Redfield Match sights. Had to open the front and rear iris up to get a sight pick.
One notable terminal result was delayed. I took a quartering shot, rat's front left shoulder, no corpus delecti. Thought it was well delivered. Hmmm, oh well.
The next day, head shot one in same tunnel area. After they all got skittish, I went up to toss'em onto the slab for the protein supplement. Examining the head shot, he also had an entry hole left qtr, exiting out the right haunch!!?? He showed no ill effects when lining him up for the coupe de grace
:o. Ya know, rereading this, it seems soooo far fetched, but honest injun, not a faded memory.
The 52B? Well, a college student working Work Study, car insurance, dates. . . . I HAD to pass. :/

Back in the 80s a friend of mine knew a veterinarian that inherited a hog farm with a problem. Due to years of neglect, the place was absolutely overrun with rats. Worse, they were huge and totally fearless. They roamed the pens and buildings openly even in broad daylight. The guy had maybe a dozen cats that all stayed on the porch and showed no interest whatsoever in tackling the rats. My friend and I spent several enjoyable weekends with .22s trying to reduce the population before the man finally hired a professional exterminating crew to eliminate the problem. I would set up a lawn chair so I could use shooting bags off the tailgate of my old pickup and used my old, surprisingly accurate, Savage 87D semi-auto with a 3-9 power scope. He had a TC rifle in .22. Sound of gunfire didn't deter them - just ignored it. We would leave after each trip with us each having used a minimum of two to three boxes of ammo and with the pens littered with dead rats, but never seemed to make a dent in the population.

In the 50's at our local store
Shorts 15 cents
Longs 20 cents
Long Rifle 25 cents
I used to help the owner (also a farmer) get up hay and do farm chores for 22 ammo...
