What Happened??

The dump master on Route 35 near Bethel, Maine gave us kids a nickel for every rat he saw us shoot. I had a Marlin 39a and a lot of rats met their fate from it. When we saved up 70¢, we went down to Dudley's General Store in East Stoneham and bought a box of Western Super-X ammo and repeated the cycle. Rats paid for about half the ammo.

I used to buy 100 count boxes of Win SuperX for 1.70 a box when I was a teenager at the local hardware. They were my fave 22s at the time.

In the early 60's I used to round up soda bottles, take them to the Mom 'n' Pop grocery store to claim the deposit, then walk across the parking lot to the hardware store where I bought a 50 round box of 22LR for 49 cents. Then off to the hills to plink tin cans, glass jars, or whatever struck my fancy. And I took my rifle to school held across the handlebars of my Schwinn Stingray, gave it to my teacher (along with the box of ammo) to hold for me until after school when I'd go to the hills before dinner. The only warning from my mom was "don't be late for dinner".

Bought my first Brick of Win Super X for my 52D Match in "63" for the outrageous price of $5.00 . Dad was very "clear" when he said I could only use them for Matches , and not practice . But the ammo we got from DCM was practice rounds .
