What good is a long barrel?

According to what I'm reading from the Rimfire Benchrest guys(which is way too much), a longer barrel responds better to a tuner.
I can't spend that kind of money chasing the one hole group, but it's fun to try.

I strongly prefer long barrels due to the noise reduction and balance. I like all guns light and long if I am going to carry it. On the bench, longer is better too. Im certainly not concerned about a few fps either way.
