What do You Think of This Rifle?

Just had it locally built on a new dual-port action. 6 Dasher, Kiff reamer, 30" 1-8 McGowan bbl, brake/blank cover, mahogany & birch strips pressed together with West Marine glue, hand cut, inletted and Devcon bedding.

Forend is "weird". Notched out and offset to counter torque.

Fireformed 4 cases today. 29.5 gr. Varget - 107 Sierra. Perfect cases and very concentric.

Will it work to shoot 600 yard gongs? What scope should I get? Criticism appreciated.

Niice! 600yrd gongs ? Id say that baby would hit 600 yrd gongs without taking out of its case. 1000 yrd more like.

Very sexy piece of kit, well wear.

Nice looking rig. Stock looks very similar to my SSS Dog Tracker, is that what it is or is it the same pattern? The offset really does counter-act torquing and tracks very good as well. I just offset my front rest a bit to the left of the rear to compensate for the offset in the fore-end and it's like it's riding on a rail.

I doubt you will have too much issue with 600yd gongs, and the 1000's should be well within reach as well, as the Dasher is a great 1000yd round.

About the only thing I would have done differently is go with a Pac-Nor barrel over the McGowan, but that's just personal preference. You should still have one heck of a shooter. Good luck with it, hope it does well for you.

Sorry, I don't shoot that long, so I am of no help with optics.

Thanks Kenny,

I also questioned the builder ( Eric Bostrom from Myakka City, Fl) on the barrel. He did a 40X 22 AI for me with a Broughton and I am pleased. Eric says McGowan's shoot "well" ... whatever that means.

The stock is "stick-built" by Eric. No production there. He just used his ideas on what a 600/1,000 yard "gong" gun should be. He builds custom home cabinets and has equipment to build stocks also. Maybe he got the idea from your Dog Tracker? Don't know.

Thanks for the input. Need to also find a rest and long gun case to move this thing.

CaptainMal,

Th first stock like yours, I saw was from David Tooley ( gunsmith and 1000yd shooter) in 2008, He was going to use it for the bigger cals. You should good pasted 1000 yds.

Nice rifle. I used to shoot with Eric and Larry with the rest of the crew at Manatee. I hope to get down there in the next month.

Don,

Hunting in Georgia starting tomorrow. Probably not start working with that gun until after Thanksgiving. Will then be there with Larry and Eric playing. They shoot those gongs on the third Saturday and the 1,000 yard stuff the last.

Hope to run into you at Manatee Co. I'm another Larry.
