What do you carry?

1911 45 ACP Ball Ammo Condition 1

I asked a gentleman, a retiree from an Army base in NC why he carried a 1911with ball ammo. Short answer from him - 1911 and 230 grain ball combo have been killing our enemies through all the wars, starting with the Moro War. 1st rule the weapon got to go bang every time. Flying ashtrays look romantic but ball are almost sure thing to cycle and go bang.

There are days when I carry my 1911 Champion, cross draw. 3 magasines with GI Hardball.

That gentleman was exactly right!!

I'm a little surprised at how many carry 380's.
30 years ago there was a big difference in size between the 380 & the 9.
The last 10 years there is very little difference in size.

Is this going to rekindle the 9mm vs .45 debates again?!
.
Idk.? I wasn't doing that.

Just saying when i went to an auto from a wheel gun. There was such a slight difference in physical size it made more sense to go with the 9mm.

sorry ... probably shouldn't have directly quoted your post ... just in general it reminded me of the countless, never ending threads from way back about the best calibers for conceal carry.

I've got a Glock 43, a Kimber micro 9 and Keltec PF9 that I carry. 9 times out of 10 I carry the Keltec. It has the belt clip that pretty much allows you to carry at any position, fits in your pocket if you want and in all honesty will out shoot the other two any day of the week with one of the most horrendous triggers you have ever felt. It goes bang every time and I hit what I aim at with it, plus it comes out of the box ugly as hell so I don't have to worry about it getting scratched or worn. I love the Kimber but its just too pretty for everyday carry.

When I used to do the NRA basic pistol course (over 1500 students over 4 years) my answer was the centerfire caliber you could control and shoot most accurately.

No problem.

Makes me wonder if there should be a new thread, about carry calibers?

Not a pissing match!!

Just some ideas on bullets, velocity, penetration, etc.
It may help new shooters who carry in public.

I have seen to many people carrying in heavly populated areas with large calibers and have no idea about penetration or over penetration.

Greetings
I read this old post with its timely posts. Please ask yourselves why are carrying a Taurus or Bersa .380acp, or some other minuscule handgun. What is it's true mission in your hands? Is this a weapon you are you going to take the fight an active shooter at the grocery store, or one you shoot the face of a street robber and run off. Carry a fighting gun.

Well.....
My wife carries a Kimber micro 380
and she's deadly accurate with it, like poke your eye out accurate.
Bullet diameter is the same as a 9mm, only 20gr lighter, but just like a deer not being able to tell the difference of a bullets velocity when hit....
Would you be willing to argue the difference in a gun fight?
I know I wouldn't!!
The 380acp aka/9mm short, is a formidable self defense cartridge, and the pistol fits in my front pocket.
The wife however wears it open cary in a cross draw holster like jewelry. Lol.
As for what I carry...
That would be me carrying my fat a$$ across the driveway to the shop and go to work.

The best cartridge for self defense is the one you can hit the bad guy with. He who gets the first hit wins. The first shot counts. The rest is just noise. I like wheel guns. If it don’t go bang just pull the trigger again.

9mm autos have more rounds but my S&W five shot revolver with .38 special +P loads is easier to carry and access. In the Winter it rides in my coat pocket and in a pocket holster in my front pants pocket the Summer.
