What do I Have and how do I fix it?

I have an old mauser action my Dad bought from Herters in .243 Win.
The rifle will not eject reliably. Either the bolt comes out in your hand or the fired case remaines attached to the bolt.
What kind of mouser is this? How do I fix it?
The bolt release gizmo is loose???
It is important to me only because it was a rifle Dad built for my Mom and I have since inherited it.

Somebody has fooled with the bolt release. The bolt stop-release is also the ejector. Never seen a mess like that. What is the screw that is added in front of the bolt stop? Find a factory bolt release assembly and install it. Easy to do and should cost very little money.

I don't think he can go back to a standard ejector box, it looks like the the ears that the ejector box screw goes through have been milled off. I have seen some odd ball ejector/bolt release systems on Husqvarna Mauser's. The action may have been supplied through them to Herters.

The pictures don't show the inside of the bolt stop/ejector assembly; but there could be two causes. One: the stock fits too snugly to the assembly so that the stop is held away from the action by the stock. If pushing the button on the release can be done and it moves freely back and forth then it isn't binding on the stock. The second option is that the stop, which is inside the action does not sit with a square angle to the bolt lug, so that when the bolt contacts it, the stop is pushed out of the way and the bolt continues out of the action. This may be the result of stuff built-up on the stop, solution, remove the stuff; or it may have been worn or as someone noted, machined off. It may be possible to return the angle to square or that part of the stop may need to be replaced.

I'm with you on all of that Ray. I suggest you take it to a reputable gunsmith for a look over and assessment. I'm fairly confident it can be fixed. The stock looks like a Boyds stock and I'm sure it was not inletted for that ejector-bolt stop-bolt release.

It is not after market. Older Browning safari Mauser type rifle use the same thing.

Looks like the ejector/boltstop is outside the receiver. Unscrew / remove spring / push ejector into receiver/ tighten spring and screw . Done

Just rebarreled a Browning in 264 win mag. Same exact set up.

What you have is an early 60s FN Mauser that has the Browning Safari style bolt stop. You have a bolt stop Ejector issue. The rifle was restocked and the stock appears to be fouling the bolt stop. Remove the barreled action from the stock and see it that solves the issue. There are videos on how to remove a stock on you tube. Just use an empty case not live ammo when you do this.

The latch feels cheesy, sometimes the bolt just comes out with out pressing the lever thingy.
The stock was not interfering with the operation of the ejector/bolt release.
Thanks for the help

If it used to work and nothing is broke maybe it has some old gun oil gunking up the works? Remington bolt releases do the same thing if theyre not used often

It’s kind of hard to see, but i think the spring is done. Served its purpose and time for a replacement. It doesn’t fit right an is weak!
Maybe someone can tell me if they were just whimpy, or mine is just worn out.

Looking at the spring again and the first pics looks like maybe it would work better put on flipped over or maybe it was put in with inner part of spring facing out instead of in.
Just an observationo_O
