What do I build next?

look at the numbers and see what bullets work well in that twist for the distance and the game size/weight.
tuff to go wrong with a 308..tho it could be chambered tighter/longer throat and still work in std bushing dies and a good seater.
I shoot 125 to 185 in my 10 or so 308's.
I may be biased

Yeah, but you have missed the joy. Out of curiosity I must ask, What you do favor in mid size cartridges..?
260, 6.5 creedmoor.
Always had a curiosity for the 6.5 Swede.
I know I'll catch hell for this, but here goes.
An 06' will do everything a 308 can do, only
Better!
I'm pushing 200gr bullets mid 2800's, 26" barrel.
Was discussing the 300wm with another shooter today at the range.
The WM takes roughly 1/3more powder than the 06', but does not provide 1/3 better prefomance.
Back to @butchlambert OP, I've thought about a 300 norma

I am very old fashioned.
30.06 outstanding .

For me and different ? 300 Winchester Mag .
I know open the bolt face ? PTG Fancy Replacement Bolt ?

Now take the bite out of it ? No Brake .
Call Mag na Port the old fashion cut in the barrel clean look and works

I have had 4 308's and have never been a fan. I'll take a 7mm-08 over 308 any day. If I had to have a 30 cal, I'll take a 30-06 over 308.

lets see your 30'06 push a 230 to 2900 from a mag bbl(26.5 in my case)
selective comparisons are typically bs
look at it the other way around a 308 will do 90%(??) of what a 30'06 will do in a lighter shorter action with less powder and less brass.

the 6'5 swede was only 100 years ahead of its time.

Sell it all and build a 67 Chevelle pro-mod and race with the Oklahoma out laws. Make sure you get the mountain motor what ever that is.

Ok ! We have to talk! The 6.5x55 is one of my favorite cartridges! You have to get one! Chew on this: I have an almost 100 year old M38 that outshoots my Tikka 6.5 Creedmoor!o_O;)

I've actually run it at 2920 with the 200gr.
What velocity will the .308 push 200gr bullet to out of same length barrel?

Back to the conversation at the range to clarify.
The velocity increase of the magnum does not equate to 30% more performance for the 30% increase of fuel and its cost.
Yes you could say the same of the 308 to 06'
But I doubt a 308 is going to push a 200 even close to 2850-2870.
So the gains of 1 over the other are purely up to the shooter.

Agreed the Swede was way ahead of it's time.
Maybe that's what I should do with the blank standing in the corner?

I had this very same conversation with myself two years ago. Self, I said; "what are you going to do with those two 99% mint 1909 Argentines sitting on the shelf...?". Something different, yet effective for anything short of the African Dangerous Five. I have my 550 Gibbs wildcat for those.

Eureka! the 6,5 and 8mm X 68 Shuler twins. The 6,5 is what the 264 WM wishes it was, and the 8mm version runs right along side the 8mm Rem Mag. NO belts!

Check the specs...

I have both LA and SA Remington receivers and an Obermeyer 11.25 twist 30 cal barrel. Contour is like a Remington magnum taper. Don't need another 30BR. Leaning toward a 308. This will be a hunting rifle.
What cartridge would you choose?
Butch, you need another barrel. Then you could have a 308 and 06.

So I'm really not getting your argument.
I understand you feel you have a better ballistic intellect than 90 %of the rest of the members, as I've read a lot of your posts bashing.
I get it, now it's my turn.
So tell us all what cartridge your shooting a 230gr @2950fps with, And while your at it with all your competitiveness, enlighten me and the rest of us the difference in drop with your 230 at stated 2950 versus my 200gr traveling @2880. My G7 is 317. Then when you get done running those #'s figure out how much more powder its taking to get your stated velocity. When you reach that # ask yourself is the cost worth the gain.
And then you might begin to understand the conversation me and another shooter were having.
