What do I build next?

Muzzle break and recoil pad will take the recoil a bit.
The adrenaline from talking a shot on game games the recoil also.
Yeah but......at my age I wouldn't build one. I bought an old beauty from Ggmac, a while ago. Metal buttplate! Dang thing rattled my teeth!!

I have an old Weatherby Mark V I bought 35 years ago. 300 Weatherby Mag. I haven't shot it in years!

I’m curious about running a necked up 6xc to .30cal for the 150-168gr class bullets. Easy feeding for a bdl, can seat bullets longer in mag than 308 length cartridges, it’s different, decent brass with Peterson or Norma, efficient case that would produce good velocity with 4350 burn rate or faster powder for mid range deer sized animals.

Then you would basically have something in between a 30x47 , 30TC, or 300 Savage.

I just went through the same process, I was without a .30 for over a year and started to panic. I had a spare S/A and started to work out what I wanted and this is what I came up with ??????

Go big or go home. 505 Gibbs is what you want. :)

I have a few big bores already. A list of some of mine, 458 Lott, 416 Rigby, 45-70, 9.3x62, 30BR, 300 SAUM, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 280AI, 7x57, 260, 6.5x47L, 6.5 Creed, 6.5SAUM, and a lot of others down to 17HMR.
My thought now is the 308 as I have none and I do not want a wildcat. My personal limit for hunting is 300 yds.

You are a glutton for punishment. I had a 338 Lapua and at one time I thought I should get the parent, a 416 Rigby. Even with a good muzzle break that 338 with 300 grain bullets would thump. Didn't think that a detached retina was worth it. Sold it and now the biggest one I have is a 9.3x62. It's a CZ full length stock and not real heavy. That thing is not what I would call a pleasure to shoot. Won't sell it though, partially because everyone needs something that'll take down a charging water buffalo but more so because I have a fetish for full length stocked rifles.

Well then it should be a 308. Everyone should have one!:)

For whatever reason my 9.3X62 is a very pleasant rifle to shoot. Maybe it is the stock design as I am recoil sensitive.

I like the .308, uses the same powders as my .20P & .204R, usually able to pick up good range brass (like Nosler, Hornady & S&B), huge selection of bullets in 125 - 168 grain range, and makes big enough bullet holes to spot at 300 with 14X provided light is good. Mine is a light weight Kimber 84M re-barreled with a #2-3 contour stainless 21.5, 10 twist barrel - light enough to tote around while hunting deers and capable of 350 yard kills (I don't feel handicapped using .30 cal. bullets instead of the higher BC 6.5 bullets at my hunting range limits).

I have both LA and SA Remington receivers and an Obermeyer 11.25 twist 30 cal barrel. Contour is like a Remington magnum taper. Don't need another 30BR. Leaning toward a 308. This will be a hunting rifle.
What cartridge would you choose?
30 Aardvark ( or 30/30 Ackley 473 rim and shoulder moved foward if wanted ) good velocity for hunting and great for lead bullets .
Odd but that's me !
10 yrs ago it would be 30-06 hands down . Still have 6-7 reamers for it , but like Josh B , it hurts in a light to med rifle during load testing.
Stay well Butch !
